May 17, 201214 yr Hi All Last night I got a wild hair and glued up some different colored woods. I glued up the first two sets of 2 and allowed them to dry over night. I now want to glue these two pieces together, but they have serious gaps where the wood should come together. When the glue started drying it pulled the glued pieces out of alignment apparently. So is this a point where I need to just buy a small hand plane, or can I actually somehow get this to work without it? I don't have anything real heavy to lay on it By the way, this is oak and black walnut that I am gluing together. I'm just wanting to experiment with multi colored multi wood turnings. May 17, 201214 yr Looks like a big OOPS to me. Â Sorry about it slipping out on you. Â Been there, done that, hated it. Â I think after the first glue-up dries I would take it through the table saw or chop saw to even out one side. Â Then when the two are glued up, I would clamp the #$% out of it. Â Remember what some folks say about free advise. Â Only my 2% of a dollar. Â Fredaka Pop's Shopwww.pops-shop.comEX-21'Soooooo many patterns - sooooo little time'
May 18, 201214 yr Although it takes more clamps, it is sometimes easier to glue all of the pieces at once. TiteBond III has a little longer open time so you get some extra minutes to get everything aligned. When I do multiple piece glue ups, I have a piece of Corian counter top to which I clamp a piece of aluminum angle iron. This acts like a fence to help keep the pieces aligned. The glue doesn't stick to the surfaces so you can clamp in about any direction. I used to use an old plastic cutting boar which worked well, too.Although I haven't purchased a lot of their stuff, you might find some decent deals for C clamps at Harbor Freight.Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler.
