May 19, 201214 yr I just place an order on the
No. 4 Groz Bench Plane from Woodcraft. I could not resist at 16 bucks! I am just really curious what 15 bucks gets in a hand plane these days. I'll tune it up, and give it to my 8 year old son and see how he does with it. I'll let you all know how it goes! I also owe you all a review of my accuhead planer cutter, sheesh, I am so behind on here, sorry guys. May 19, 201214 yr  might be on the same level ( different colour) as my #33 "Bench Plane" from "Windsor Design".  If nothing else, you could turn it into a very mean Scrub Plane 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
May 19, 201214 yr I can tune it to work as well as any plane it its a lot like the older bailey design Stanley and it wont be flat so you will have to hone it flat on a flat surface then the other thing will be the chip breaker wont mate with the blade so you are going to have to file them to make them engage correctly. Once you got that done you will need to get the blade as sharp as humanly possible this takes a great effort and will pay dividends if your edge is truly razor sharp if not the results will be bad and you will get frustrated and will swear off hand planes.I could fettle the plane for you in short order if you really want to make a user out of it I have done a few of the groz planes for people who thought they were getting a real nice plane but all they got was frustration I was abler to get nice thin full thickness shavings off these and the fact is they are not well made and yet you can get them to preform if you know what sharp really is.If you don't know what sharp is get private lessons and end the frustration.   Let me know if I can help you LanceÂ
May 19, 201214 yr Author Thanks Lance! I got the sharpening down by now after a few years, I got quite the collection of hand planes, a few LN's, LV's and some nice old Baileys, all of them are daily users, I was only playing with this Groz, just wanted to see what a cheap plane can do is all. You gave some great advice on the tuning of the Groz, thanks!Lance The Dude Granum said: I can tune it to work as well as any plane it its a lot like the older bailey design Stanley and it wont be flat so you will have to hone it flat on a flat surface then the other thing will be the chip breaker wont mate with the blade so you are going to have to file them to make them engage correctly. May 31, 201214 yr Author I'll report in on Saturday, but for now, it went ok, spent about half hour tuning it up, we were cutting nice shavings in no time, not my first choice in plane, a bit rough, well very rough, but it worked fine!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
