May 23, 201214 yr Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on building a Dulcimer, I love the instrument, and the music it plays, it appears to be a straight forward build. Any ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
May 24, 201214 yr John The dulcimer has always been one of my favorite stringed instruments. And there a lot of building sites online. How big of a challenge are you looking for. Everything from the shape to the building process offers a varying degree of difficulty. From the type of material used to deciding between steam bending, laminating, or dry bending. "Sounds' like a fun project. lol  Just a couple links. one for building. http://www.bearmeadow.com/index.html one for a song. One of my favorites. No greater Loves than God, Family, Friends, country, the sight of flying chips and the smell of saw dust.
May 25, 201214 yr Author Russell, that is one of my favorite hymns man, I love it! And if you've never heard her before, here is her version of I'll Fly Away. I could not find a live version of her singing, but her voice is from the heavens, a favorite artist in our home. I wish I knew who her accompaniment was on this song because she is fabulous as well. There is a live version floating around out there whit Allison and Emmy Lou Harris, maybe this is one of them. Thanks for the links Russell, seems there are some great resources for doing these instruments and playing them. I guess that is why they were love the mountain people and still are, it is truly an American instrument. Thanks again Russ!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
May 27, 201214 yr She is one of my favorites too. Union Station has the greatest Dobro players ever (Jerry Douglas) truly a lost art on today's music scene. John Morris said:Russell, that is one of my favorite hymns man, I love it! May 27, 201214 yr Author Hey Russell, I found this great community I joined, Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. May 28, 201214 yr John, I was wondering what a dulcimer was, until I checked out the website.(insert Homer Smiley here)  I didn't realize there were so many variations of the instrument.  Reminds me of the instrument Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies played. I've got to check out more of the site!  You're right the site looks kind of familiar. I think I might try building one then try to learn how to play it. It might be fun if I can get the wife to learn how to play her violin like a fiddle. I can see us jambing now   Larry

May 29, 201214 yr My grandmother had/played an "Autoharp" or Zither. It was pretty cool!Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
May 29, 201214 yr Ron, Why not?   I look like I just came down from the top of a mountain.  Lets see now my ( hippie chick ) wife , wearing a peasant dress on the violin ( playing it fiddle style ) Me wearing a tie-dyed tee-shirt and bib overalls , playing the dulcimer, and harmonica.  For our first number we could play Wildwood Flower grew wild on the Farm, then go into the Devil went Down to Georgia, then do On the Cover of the Rolling Stone. Ahh it's beautiful man!   Larry  Ron Dudelston said: Larry, for some reason I can't get my head wrapped around an image of you playing a dulcimer. Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
