Rocket Racer

Featured Replies

Decided to try my hand at the Red Rocket Racer which is a pattern offered by Toymaker Press - John and Cynthia Lewman.  Pattern was very detailed and easy to follow.  This is just one of many great patterns offered by this company.

All parts were cut on the scroll saw except for the axles which were cut on the table saw - to save myself a little work.  :)

Rocket Racer is 24 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 15 inches high.  Recommended for toddlers 18 months and older.  Made from poplar and walnut.  Had planned to make it out of maple, but stock maple from Home Depot was only 5 1/2 inches wide and I didn't want to laminate pieces together. Directions called for just gluing everything together, but I used some screws and plugs on the seat,  on the axles, and on the block under the handle for additional support.

CPSIA doesn't require testing on USP grade mineral oil and beeswax as these products are on their exempt list - reason I chose this finish.  Recipe for this finish is also offered on the Toymaker Press website.

Thanks for looking.  Any and all comments would be appreciated.

SQ, that looks great. I got the email from them about this and almost bought it. They've got a bunch of neat toy patterns http://toymakerpress.com/website/PlanSets/Quick-Easy-Red-Rocket-Ryder.html

I posted the video on making the beeswax finish a while back.

Greg,

Thanks!  I couldn't resist and bought the pattern while it was on sale over the weekend.  I think I will give the vehicles a try from the Wild Woody's Cruisin Diner which is being offered for free.  Those vehicles are really cute with the fenders.

Yes, I remember when you posted the finish, but thought it couldn't hurt to mention it again.

I bought the set of farm equipment a while back but haven't had a chance to make any yet.

Greg,

What a fun set!  Looking forward to seeing it made up.  I have had my eye on several more of their patterns including Noah's Ark.

Lewis,

Thanks.  I have always been under the impression that store bought wheels were necessary for making toy cars, etc. With instructions from this pattern ,discovered just how easy making "round" wheels really is.  Now I want to make more items with handcrafted wheels.  Grin.gif

SQ,

I made a small circle cutting jig for my band saw then adapted the idea for my oscillating spindle sander. Between the two machines, the circles come out pretty nice.

Lewis,

It really is easier than one might expected.  Toymakers Press pattern came with instructions for a simple wheel jig which clamps to a disk sander.  I was pleased with the results.

I thought about getting that one too and giving it to the nursery at church.

Yes.  Was I the only one that didn't know how to do this?  Say it isn't so.  Grin.gif

In the past I've used a hole saw to cut them or just bought them. I don't have disc sander either.

That's a good idea, too.
