May 31, 201214 yr  seems a package arrived today.   Had to wait a few hours, since the mail carriers were short-handed.  Underneath a bunch of "Pop-corn" and encased in a mile of bubble wrap ( BUBBLE WRAP!! OH! AHHHH!!) was a few old parts. After unwrapping things, this is what "fell out' of the bag:A crack free baseKind of scratched up knob. screws look good though. paintjob to come. Next item:Got Brass?  Older froggie, a look at the other side?almost looks like a bailey, don't it?  But, not quite.  There was a chip off the old block, thoughjust have to find some mahoganey.  This is NOT Rosewood.    Ok, a look at the whole picture? This is a Union #5A.    Same size as a Stanley #5-1/2.   About 1902-1910 era.  Should be nice when i get it cleaned up... May 31, 201214 yr A great find - worth waiting for Now if I could just find a real circa 1900 velocipede that I could afford  Fredaka Pop's Shopwww.pops-shop.comEX-21'Soooooo many patterns - sooooo little time'
June 1, 201214 yr Author Gave the small parts an overnight soaking, in apple cider Vinegar.   hey at least they smell better.    All the bolts, washers, posts, and the brass went in, along with the frog, and the lever cap.   Took them out this morning, and wire brushed the bolts clean, shined the brass, and cleaned the rest off to dry.    i even soaked a bunch of my saw files, as well.  Anyway, here is a "Rogue's Gallery" of parts:Frog and brass, early style Union Lever cap, flipper was frozen, got it moving real nice, now.....Scary Sharped iron, and chip breaker.  iron is 2-1/4" wide.  I also cleaned the bolt between these two.   As for the body, what looked like "patina" was just a dark brown RUST.   Cleaned the sides and sole last night. looks better now.   As for the 'woodwork' on this plane,  there is a wood that starts with Mah......  this is that wood, as Union Mfg Co. of New britain CT.  didn't use rosewood for handles.   Stanley bought all that up.  Up next?   paint stripping, what is left of that japanning ain't worth saving.   A couple coats of Rustoleum Gloss Black should be alright... June 1, 201214 yr Author  He was nice again today!   Got a smaller box this morning.   Three items inside a half mile of BUBBLE WRAP ( Bubble wrap!!! oooh aaahhh)  a frog for a Union #4;   will be cleaned up, and replace the broken frog on my Union #4G.   a frog AND a lever cap for a Union #3.    project parts for later.   Might see how the fit a Defiance #3....... June 1, 201214 yr Author  as for a little box that came today?  One part needed a lot of work, BEFORE I can use it to fix a Union #4G's frog.   #4G's frog is missing a lateral adjustor, and a chunk of iron.   New frog will take care of that.   Seems a bolt that the adjuster wheel rides on was bent.here it is, sitting next to my new #3 frog. Notice anything different?    Ever see one of these bolts with a slotted, tapered end on it? AND bent, to boot?     Got out the tools ( clamp for the back Porch Bench, Big Ball Pean hammer, couple of visegrips) and removed the offending bolt.  Took a while though.   I did keep the wheel, i can always re-thread it.  I can use the hardware off the broken frog this will replace, as well.  Let's see, you've seen two out of three parts from that little box, how about the third?Mutt & jeff???  Sitting beside it's Big Brother, is my new Union #3 lever cap.  Got a project for it, later on....
