Most unusual grain

Featured Replies

I turned down another piece  from the unknown wood that I cut down in my back yard. It was a small tree, about 6" in dia and 5' tall. I was about to toss it when I noticed the unusual grain. I posted a picture of some turnings, but this piece is very unusual.

It looks like I glued two pieces together. It is very unusual and beautiful. I have not decided what I am going to make out of it yet. It is about  10" long and I had to cut out some bad places to get this shape. Ron,

I have been thinking about making a mortar and pestle, for the kitchen. This looks like it would make a beautiful pestle.

Ron, your right, when I first saw it, I noticed it looked like you glued it together at that seam. Very unusual, and beautiful! How about a handled mirror for the misses? John Moody make those too.

It is pretty wild looking. Was the tree healthy when you took it down?

The tree was half dead three years ago, then it died and I let it set for a couple of years thinking it may come back. It had green bark and vines that fell out of the top, with flowers on them. It was here when we moved and I have to think it is an ornamental tree/bush of some kind. Someone said it was a Chinese tree of some kind

The change in color could have been caused by disease then.

Love the way the wood looks. So many possibilities pop into mind. The wife and I had some Japanese trees growing in our yard before I gave my house to my son and daughter in law for part of their wedding.  Sort of looks like a cedar and Holly mix. What ever it is it is totally gorgeous.

couldn't tell ya what it is but would make .a cool neck for a guitar

After re-looking at it and thinking. I would think it would make a special pepper grinder.
