Re-habbing a few more planes...

Featured Replies

well, i got a few parts in those two little boxes this past week.  Time to put them to use.    I strppied the Union #5A down , and sprayed the base with some "Carb. Cleaner" and let it soak awhile.    Ran the the frog under the wire brush on the drill press.    All the smaller parts were already cleaned, after an over-night soak in Vinegar ( Apple Cider Vinegar, thank you)  once the frog was cleaned off of the old paint, out came the masking tape.  Just waiting around for the CC to finish up.    While waiting for that base to get "happy", i decided to work on another frog,   Seems my Union #4G had a piece of junk for a frog...ning-sdc12610-28866-57.jpg?width=750Notice anything missing??   Just so happens, I had a "spare' frog that came in the second box the mail brought by.    Upon looking it over, something alos looked a bit "funny"ning-sdc12602-28866-32.jpg?width=750A  #3 frog on the left, That #4 frog on the right.  Notice the bolt?   Just a little bent.  Got the wheel off, and started to remove that ugly bolt, finally got the ba#@#d out. ning-sdc12607-28866-26.jpg?width=750Ugly?? Nah.    Ok, went to use the bolt out of the old frog, hmm , wrong threads.   Old frog= left hand threads vs "new' frog needing RIGHt handed threads?     Looked around for a spare bolt of some sort... ah, an old "C"clamp.     Right size ( or close enough to tap some threads) just a tad long.   Got the new "bolt installed, cut the end off with a grinder ( hack saw went awol long ago) and put the new frog in it's new home. ning-sdc12609-28866-49.jpg?width=750Not too bad.    let it 'wear in" a bit, should be fine.     Older Unions used right hand threads, stanley came along, and all thread turned to the left.    Well I was at it, used the old frog's wheel to replace that buck Brothers #5 pot metal wheel.   I also had a "new" Union #3 lever cap in the house, so... Franckenplane my Defiance #3 for awhile.ning-sdc12608-28866-21.jpg?width=750I went on the refinish that knob on the #4.   More on that later, time to mask and spray two items.ning-sdc12612-28866-34.jpg?width=750While the paint dried, Worked on some handles.  The tote was hand sanded until all the old finish was gone,  found a surprise as well.     The two knobs were chucked up in the drill press, spun sanded until clean.  #5A's knob also was a surprise.    The number 4 was just as strange looking.   Since i had them ready for a 'finish' i oiled them down.    While the two knobs were on the drill press, an oily rag was held tightly on each.    The tote was "Hand Rubbed'.     OIl?    In a "Poly shop?    Yep, 3-n-1 oil.     Ok paint finally set up enough I could put this big guy back together.    In the background of this next picture, check out that crazy knob on the #4... Here we go...ning-sdc12613-28866-69.jpg?width=750Took it for a  "Test Drive' on that 1x in the leg vise.   How do you spell MAHOGANY????Grin.gif

Nah, each of the little planes are set differently.     Smoothers, maybe, but some take a different set-up to work just right.   Same with the jacks, for almost no camber to a heavy camber.     Still missing from the "Line up"?    Low angle block planes, maybe a decent #6 size plane.    Molding planes?    Nope, still have two good electric type routers.   Not 100% Neanderthal, but getting there....

'and may the road raise up to meet ye'

I prefer the term Anarchist to Neanderthal which was a derogatory term used buy power tool guys who think it is stupid to do work by hand. Schwarz coined the term Anarchist and it was done in a positive way. So I prefer that term myself. I have close to 200 planes in the shop and am selling off the extras

I go by Neanderthal, ever since I've found a second ( third??) home on Saw Mill Creek's  neander Haven  section.   Really don't follow the schwarz that much.      Plane collection??    IF 15 planes can be called that....

Most of mine are "also-runs" of Stanleys, Unions, and a few Sargents.    One bailey amongst  all of that.    I'll go out looking for old rust buckets, and bring to the shop.      Right now, there are three number threes,  four number 4s, a couple block planes,  three 'regular jacks" and a super-sized jack.    The bailey is the Jointer of this Mob.     The #129 is the Fore plane.    Looking at a couple low angle blocks right now, and a Union #6.   After that, don't really need much else.......Grin.gif

Just won a Stanley #120 on the bay,  should be here in a couple days.      Easier to mail it here thatn drive up to pick it up.     About 60 miles, one way.    Next, I jus have to turn a new knob for it,  old one is AWOL..

'and may the road raise up to meet ye'

you should try to find the money planes the bedrocks found in the junk piles are where the  real money is.

As for SMC They are the worst bunch of xnobs in the world so i dont like any thing they do but you already know that dont you

Yep, ask any of those "Which plane should i buy..."  questions, and right away someone will tell you  "You can't be a serious Woodworker unless you buy  ( Fill in the blank  ...  LN , LV, )  "    No matter what plane the OP might have, if it ain't one of "Their's"  , they will jump all over the OP for NOT buying their brand.

Planes i am buying right now are users.     I am still selling saws.    Most of the Disstons are sold..   Took that old Worth #5 to some well-behaved Pine, and made a nice wide ribbon.    Can't quite see through it,  because the Worth is set as a jack plane, not a smoother.
