June 7, 201214 yr Author  Spent about an hour out on the back porch bench.   Cleaned up the handyman H1203.   Chip beaker and lever cap have been galvanized ( WHY??)  but everything else cleaned up nicely.   Base has a coat of Gray paint on it, instead of the normal black.   Debating whether to leave the gray on, or strip it down.   Black frog looks ok. just a wire brushing.    Sole got cleaned off ( lots of paint streaks, and rust) as well as the sides.  Still have to flatten the sole.  This MIGHt be like a Vitamin.......One-a-days.... And, yes, i intend to re-sharpen that chewed up iron.  Must be a lot of nails back where this came from... 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'

June 7, 201214 yr things of beauty.thanks for sharing. No greater Loves than God, Family, Friends, country, the sight of flying chips and the smell of saw dust.
June 9, 201214 yr Author  Seems that Sargent made both the Fulton 414 Jack plane (for Sears & Roebuck) but they also made the Craftsman #3.   The Craftsman I got was a Hercules clone. Got a nice long bed to it, longer than most of my #4s. Iron is still a #3 size @ 1.75" wide.  Plus, it does have those "Groovy" sides.    Fulton may get the tote off of my #129 Stanley.   Might do a even-up swap.  Got both up and running, for now.   As for them "purple plastic handles"    we'll see......'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
June 9, 201214 yr Looking good Steve. Your doing some fine work on getting these old relics in workable condition.I got a question, I noticed the shavings are pretty narrow, indicating a blade not even across the cutting edge or cambered too much, as it is your only getting shavings that appear to be about a half inch in size. Have you worked on getting those blades to cut more wood? Or are you intentionally cambering them to take only a small amount out of the material? Preferably you'd like to see a shaving almost nearly the same width as the blade, unless again, it is cambered, but even a properly cambered blade should produce shaving about 3/4 the width of the blade.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
June 9, 201214 yr Author Shavings are 3/4" wide, due to my planing a 3/4 wide piece of scrap oak.   Fulton is not cambered, yet.  Not counting shipping costs, these four planes cost a whopping $12 total.      Works out to be about $8 (counting shipping) each.   Not bad when one of them turns out to be a Millers Falls No. 9 type 4.   'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
