Mystery Plane

Featured Replies

Trying to get three little block planes cleaned up.     Shocking them didn't quite work, will need a bigger "Zapper" i guess.    One little block is a rebuilt Stanley #120.    The second one is a might smaller, about an inch shorter.   The third one?   Well, it IS the same size as the #120, butning-sdc12727-28016-94.jpg?width=750When  you need a 5/32 allen wrench to remove the cap?  Check out that iron, as well.  ning-sdc12729-28016-2.jpg?width=750Different shape under the "hood' as well.   Look Ma, NO WHEEL! now about that ironning-sdc12728-28016-40.jpg?width=750Ever see a Block plane set up like a scrub plane.   That is one big camber there.   Look closely at the end of the iron.    That is the logo for Diamond Edge  Tools.    As for the base..ning-sdc12730-28016-91.jpg?width=750All it says is "MadeinUSA",  no other markings, at all.  Strange plane,   A DE????Scrub/Block Plane????

Might have been made by Sargent for Diamond Edge Tools???  This little critter has been around awhile.   Same overall size as my Stanley #120, BUT, the cap sits way higher in the air, the stanley has a way to adjust the depth, with a lever.   Knob is a bit unusuall as well..   26.gif

As for that stanley #120:    Got a replacement cap, and it fits!!     The iron though has another dating feature.     Instead of your usual  Stanley in a box logo, or a "V" shaped logo, or even a Sweetheart thingy, this iron has a stamped

STANLEY  RULE & LEVEL Co.  in a big curve around the top edge of the iron.   A MADE IN USA is in a line across the iron's width.    MIGHT be something inside that arch, just can't see anything, yet.

As for the third blockplane.    It has a 1-1/2 wide iron, no markings, other than those grooves on the iron's edge.  Hmm, a Toothing Block plane?   Base is just a hair shy of 2" wide, by about 6-1/2" long.   Cap has a "Bottle-cap' adjustor to tighten the iron down.    Iron rests on a single "post".     In front of the opening for the non-adjustable mouth..... well, instead of the usual  flat stock, this has a wedge shape.     Small round knob, with a bolt through it.   The only markings so far has been a "5" on the underside of the cap.   Strange planes are flying around these parts.....Grin.gif

#1  Stanley #120    VERY old iron..

#2- DE Block plane, made by Sargent as a 107.    Has the same footprint as a Stanley #2.    Might have been cambered as a small smoother.

#3-    MIGHT be a Stanley?     SMALL little plane, 1-1/2 wide iron.    6-1/2" long base.    FANCY knob, modeled on a Stanley "High Knob" just sized to fit a small block plane.   Has stanley style threads.
