The Conover Lathe

Featured Replies

I saw a Conover on Ebay a few years back and fell in love with it. I still thing they are the coolest looking lathes around, classic lines, and heavy, and expandable to 5000 feet, naw just kidding, but you can expand them to turn porch rails and columns, or keep em short to turn bowls etc. I don't turn yet, but someday when I do, I will be looking for a Conover Lathe sometime in my life.

Joe, the Conovers are no longer made, they were Made In The USA till 2002 and they went down. You have to find them at auctions and classifieds. Here is a great link to a site that shows how that bed gets extended. Steve Bedairs Site.

The lathe can be as long as is safe for your work that you are doing. It sits on a beam of wood that you decided how long it should be. When your on that site, look at the beauty of American Made simplicity, heavy duty, like it was made when pride was the word of the day. But it was made up until a relative short time ago.

That DOES look like really COOL lathe!

I really like the adjustable length feature!  The BEST I've seen!

Why don't all of them do that?!

So they can SELL others at different lengths?!   Grin.gif

Are they For Sale anywhere?  Right now?

John,

That is a cool lathe, and in my opinion should qualify as an Old Woodworking Machine in the fact that it has been orphaned buy the company having gone under.

It certainly has the same quality Old Machinery Larry. Why did it go under? I know it was pretty pricey.

Here is another Made In The USA machine that is pricey, but holding its own, and it has the aesthetic appeal of the old machines we like Larry. Check these guys out, if your in the market for a Radial Arm Saw, and money is not a problem these guys blow all competitors away, even the venerable modern Delta RAS.

John,

If I'm not mistaken The Original Saw Company bought the rights to Dewalts old line of saws.

I've got a 1958 Delta 900 RAS it's my newest "Old Machine" and the same age as me!

Your probably right Larry, The Original Saw looks like the older Dewalts no doubt. The only difference is the color, the chassis look identical, put some old speckled green paint on it and you got a nice old Dewalt Made in the USA.
