June 28, 201214 yr The first one, Diamond Edge #6 arrived this week.  Half it's weight was rust.   Wound up teaching a shipper about HOW to pack a plane.  ( Refunds work that way) One does NOT send items in the USPS system in a box like this:Imagine what was inside this...and this..Ad said only a cracked front handle.   I knew about the rust.  On a Brighter note...Now, THIS is how you ship a handplane.  Foam "blankets", mini-airbags, and BUBBLEWRAP (ooooh) Inside this big coccoon, there was a big old piece of cast ironAt 19-3/8' long.  Yes, i knew about the cracked tote, got that covered ahead of time.   Planes name? Wait for it...a Keen Kutter #7.   With a low knob ( just some TLC there) a Stanley (??) iron that is just a hair ( alright, maybe two red hairs)narrower than the chip breaker.   CB has a second slot cut in it.At least this looks good. A few more looks at this old plane?Frog. Seems to look ok.   The iron from the DE6 IS the same width as this KK7's chip breaker, might be able to swap around.   KK7's Stanley iron has a STANLEY stamped along with a PAT APR 19 02. Franckenplane???Both frogs look about the same, except I like one I can at least remove.   The DE6's still is locked down, TIGHT.   Might try some ATF4 and kerosene mix.   Wouldn't hurt to soak the whole frog, either:NASTY!!  I'll have to re-check which way the adjustor wheels turn on both.   Anybody want a "Gutta Percha Tote????Well, enough yakking, too bleeding 'ot around here to work to long on either of these.  Just looked...101, on a shady back porch 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
June 29, 201214 yr Author Getting a breeze, every once and awhile.   Cleaned all i could get to tonight.    Might be out in the shop tomorrow and refurb two planes.   Seems I have a Sargent made #5 to finish up.  As for that wreck of a DE6?  Strip what parts I can for spares on the KK7.  Got it's frog loose ( the #7) and cleaned up.  Cleaned all the bolts that I could remove to clean.  Those bolts holding the #7's frog have some of the thickest washers i've ever seen. Handles are off.  had to finish breaking the tote, needed a pair of visegrips to remove the long bolt.  Chucked bolt into the drill, and took it for a spin, holding some sandpaper to shine it up.   More pictures to follow later.   Been a long and hot day.   Not too bad fro staying up 30 hours???'and may the road raise up to meet ye'

June 29, 201214 yr I hope you didn't send the two piece plane back. That's the way they came from the factory. Makes sharpening the blade easier. They are very rare. Only 25 made.
June 30, 201214 yr Author  I worked on the two planes almost all day today.    Got all the parts off the DE6, and threw away the broken base.    The Gutta Percha tote went as well.   I just kept the bolts, tote came off in three pieces.   Frog is almost the same as the KK7's frog. Both are by Union.  One (DE6) is a left hand thread on the adjustor wheel, the KK is right handed.   That is all the difference.  Cleaned up a Sargent #5 today as well. taking a swipe down Pine Avenue.   You can see some of the "spares' as well. As for the KK7?   Stripped, wire brushed down to bare metal, painter's tape applied, and some Rustoleum Gloss Black applied: I also tried out the frogs Swapped out the Stanley iron for the DE iron, DE iron is actually a hair wider than the stanley.    Seemed to be a better match to the KK7.    No biggie, now I have a spare Stanley iron,   Ain't a "Sweetheart" one, this one was before the Sweethearts came out, since it has a pat. date stamped on it.   When the new tote arrives, I'll install it, and take the "New & Improved" KK7 for a test drive/ 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
July 7, 201214 yr Author  A Before photo of the KK7:And the "After" photos:out getting a sunburn on that Cherry tote.    have since oiled it down.   'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
