Landscape Lanterns

Featured Replies

These are Landscape Lanterns made from plans in Woodsmith #141. They're made from western ceder. The lights used in these are 12 volt 18 watt automotive bulbs. After I apply the Poly I'll install frosted plexiglass panels. I'll post pics of the finished product early next week. I'm having a hard time locating automotive / marine light sockets. I wanted to make two first to see if I wanted to make more. It looks like I'll be making 10 more. Thanks for looking and stay tuned for the finished lights.

If you looking for sockets. Try looking for a socket that will a 921 bulb, if that's too bright them a 194 will work. I do this for a living but not sure of the wattage of the bulbs. Normally these bulbs fit a side marker light for most GM, Ford and Chrysler cars. Some of the high mount brake lights use the same sized socket. These are readily available from most auto parts. Best of luck. places. Looking forward to the finished product. Looks great so far.

These are gorgeous!!

You probably have already checked but in our area we have Autozone, Advance AutoParts and NAPA dealers that all carry electrical parts.

No Joe It wont be solar powered. I haven't found any solar lights that put out enough light plus living in the Pacific NW we dont get consistent sunshine.

Thanks Wayne for the info I'll give those a try. I need something that uses an 18 watt bulb. The plans call for a 1141 bulb and a 4345-306 socket.

Lewis we have those as well and none of them carry the socket specified in the plans, or anything close to it.

Randall, thank you!

Mike,

Here is a link to a supplier that is fast and reliable- we use them at my school.. Looks like some of the prices are pretty good, too.

Well here is the finished product. The pic that shows them lit really doesn't do them justice because the camera was set to auto so it makes it appear that it was taken during daylight but is was actually dark out. These lanterns produce a lot of light but not overly so. I will be building a lot more and I will use them to replace the metal halogen lights I have now, plus the bulbs are considerably cheaper.

Ohh that's really sweet.   Before I read to the end I was going to suggest this:

But I want to know how you are powering the lights.

Are you using a low voltage converter?  Is it NEMA 4 for out of doors or do you have it inside?

Inquiring minds are all a twitter and all that.

Thanks Cliff, they're powered by a low voltage pwr supply and it's outdoors behind the trees in the background.

Those are soooo cool. Great project Mike and excellent craftsmanship. I can see why you are building more. They really dress things up and look great in a woodworkers yard! Glad you got the bulb and socket you needed.

Looks like another good blog write up to me.

Thanks John, Larry & Larry's Wife. They do look impressive at night and they are better looking than the typical landscape lighting we had there before. It'll take awhile to get them all built but I'll get it done by next spring. It's one of those projects that you work on a few at a time.

These look great Mike a super addition to your yard ,

Breathtaking!  Suddenly, I am feeling calm ...

Thanks Jim & Claude. I have a few more to make.

Looks like a project for some of my white oak

I  have wanted foot lights around my pool for ages  and this is a great idea.

I never thought of low voltage and auto bulbs and sockets

The auto bulbs produce a lot of light and the bulbs are way cheaper than the "LANDSCAPE BULBS" they sell at HD & Lowes. You may have to experiment with different bulbs to get the right luminosity for your particular application.
