I'm Building a New Router Table

Featured Replies

I've always said that innovation is great but plagiarism is quicker.  I'm going to build a new router table and I know their are some nice tables that my friends here might show me.  Will you?  At this time I'm not going to put a lift in it but rather a drop in insert for my trusty PC 892.

Hey, I'm not proud.  I'll even steal.  Ahem, I mean look at, someone's plans.

Ron, here is the table I have, and I have had it for about 8 years now and it has served me very well. When I was looking at making a router table, I added up the costs, and I could not make one cheaper then these guys make this most excellent table for. I was really looking forward to making my own, but when I saw the RT guys in Canada, I threw in the towel and just pulled the trigger on this one. And, it's Made in North America!!!!

Here is the link RT-1000

And here is a pic

I Gene, I have to build it.  My router table only has a 2 1/2" opening and the RP cove bit won't fit.  What an opportunity to upgrade.  In fact, I ordered a new Bosch yesterday to hang under it.

This unit cost 345 bucks to my front door from Canada. I could not pass it up!

That 892 oughta spin that RP bit with no problems. I use a 7518 (motor only). It doesn't complain, either.Grin.gif

Gonna put that Bosch in a lift? I'd recommend it. Or, does the Bosch adjust from the top of the table?

Noted that the table John referenced has a T slot. You gonna put one in? I never found a slot to be useful. Then, my miter gauges, being adapted for the Shopsmith slot, are a non standard size.Tongue.gif All my shop made sleds and etc. just run against the fence.

Gene, the t-slot on my table fits all my jigs and miters, and feather boards. It's really handy. I retrofitted my RT1000 with a Woodpecker aluminum insert and mounted a PC 7518 up to it. I am sold on the PC line of routers, I don't think there is a more powerful router then the 7518. It sounds like a jet engine when you fire it up. I believe you can still get PC routers Made in the USA too, my 7518 is clearly marked Made In The USA.

The Bosch is going in the tabl;e and it is adjustable from the top with the base unit kit.  Moody and I were talking today about the t-slot and I'm still up in the air about it.  I seldom use mine now so I may not hassle with it.  I suppose I can put it in later.

My RT does not have the T- slot and I wish it did. I use my Incra 1000 Miter Gauge from my table saw on the RT as it works well with lots of support and adjustment, but I have to remove the slot tip each time. My RT top is a laminated one from Rockler and has served me well for many years. But when I re-do my RT I would like to go with a metal top as opposed to a laminated one.

John, I suppose for jig holding, it would be handy. For feather boards, I have a bridge that spans the table and clamps down much like a table saw fence. My RT is a Jointech. It's part of the TS, so that bridge also works for the TS.

For coping cuts and other cross grain cuts, I use a sled that rides the fence. Since the setup never had a slot, I guess I just got used to working without one.

Yep, my 7518 was born in the USA, also. Mine's in a Jessem lift with it's own plate. Instead of using the crank to adjust the height, I use an old yard sale 12V B&D drill and a length of hex rod. I tried smaller battery operated drills but they didn't have the oomph to lift that 15lb monster.Grin.gif

My RT is an extension on my table saw. It has the miter slot and it is very handy. In time I am going to build a separate RT. I do use a lift I purchased at Rockler. I have several plans for a new table. Let me know what you are looking for in a RT and I will see what I can do for you. My router in the table is a PC 892 and is great.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been thinking of making a new table from concrete using the techniques from interior counter production.

I want two router tables.  The one I have is a laminate ply  base and is mounted to may sliding saw off the end of my slider and let me tell you there's nothing quite so nice as a slider on a router table.   But I'd also like  a three station one like the three station shaper table like the WoodTek three station shaper.

I also like the 1/4" thick router  table inserts.
