July 5, 201214 yr Hi guys and ladies I am trying to find a way to get SMALL tools to do small turnings with. It was suggested to me that a 3/8 spindle gouge would work for what I want, but i was always under the impression that using spindle gouges for hollowing was a NONO because it would always hang. Is this true or not? I am trying to find alternate tools that are less expensive that can do the same job as the more expensive tools. To do small hollowing and to also do outside detail work is what i want. The only problem with the tool that was suggested is that it has a 15 inch handle on it which is not really what I want, I want something that can be used on the smaller lathes like the Turncrafter commander 10 without having to take the tail stock off every time. i did try to just take the small 1/4 spindle gouge I got as a gift and put a fingernail grind on it but since I dont have the bracket to hold it center while grinding, it went off center lol so now all I can use it for is making grooves which it does well Thanks all. Any suggestions welcome and if someone can build me a fingernail grind bracket for my grinder, I would like to talk to you, It would be much appreciated. July 9, 201214 yr I got a nice set of Robert Sorby miniature tools for under 100 dollars a few months ago on eBay I have tried lots of tools and was playing with a Windsor designs set of regular tools they are cheep and yet they hold a good edge although not my favorite cheep tools the ones that I seem to like best of the cheep tools is the Benjamin' s best they hold their edge better than the other cheep tools I have tested I feel safe recommending the cheaper tools as long as you know how to sharpen them that is the key to success .I do have almost a full set of Robert Sorby full sized tools I love these tools and think they are top shelf tools. as far as spindles gouges go I was taught they were for spindles and they work well in spindles but not very good on other things IMHO
July 11, 201214 yr I'm new here but I saw you were looking for small tools. I have a set of the Glaser MiniQR tools. They are small but they think they are big. I use them all the time even though I have plenty of large tools too. The cool part is, one handle with up to 12 changeable tool heads.
July 11, 201214 yr I'm a die hard Glaser tool guy. Made in the USA and the finest in craftsmanship. IMHO there is no better line of turning tools made anywhere. If you want to call Glaser, tell them you want to talk to Paulo and that I sent you. He's a dear friend of mine.
