July 11, 201214 yr I posted this in my introduction but I think the right place would be here. I built this piece for the recent AAW symposium in San Jose Ca. It has 1902 pieces of tropical Walnut & curly Maple. It stands 12" tall, 8" diameter and is 3/16" thick. Thanks for having me and please enjoy.
July 11, 201214 yr I cannot begin to fathom how this is put together. The segments are incredibly sharp, what kind of glue and clamping do you use Bill? And tropical Walnut? Where does it come from? I know, the tropics? But what parts?Great piece Bill. How was the symposium, our own member and premier Woodcraft Blogger Frank Byers was at the San Jose Symposium, did you see him?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
July 11, 201214 yr AAW Symposium, in the world of wood turning that is as big as it gets. Gets me thinking about one of my (hope I have a chance to meet him someday) heros David Ellsworth.Anyway, everytime i look at your segmented vase i am in awe. What a beautiful creation. No greater Loves than God, Family, Friends, country, the sight of flying chips and the smell of saw dust.
July 11, 201214 yr Author Thanks very much . I got to talk to David Elsworth for a little while myself. What a kind & knowledgeable man. I got the wood from Woodworkers source here in Tucson so I don't know what region it's from. I ask them when I go there next time though. I spent most of my time with Bruce Campbell & Malcolm Tibbetts. Both of them were just wonderful to learn from and talk to.
July 11, 201214 yr Bill, the only word for the vase is stunning. How many hours do you have in it and what kind of finish? Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
July 11, 201214 yr Oh My!This surely puts my mediocre work in perspective, doesn't it.I think we may have found someone who is actually qualified to be the host of the Wood Turners Forum.Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
July 12, 201214 yr Author I pretty busy but I'm more than happy to contribute any way I can. I'll have a real treat soon, I'm working on a segmented turning with around 20,000 pieces. It'll be about 34" tall & 22" in diameter. I recently got a new PM 4224 so I want to put it to the full test of its swing & power. Â Â As far as the time into this one, I think around 100 to 150 hours in it. Maybe more. When I start turning or doing glue ups, I loose track of time. The glue is Titebond 2 and most of the clamping is done with my fingers. LOL.
July 14, 201214 yr Bill,That piece or rather all 1902 pieces is truly fantastic!  I have tried cutting  segmented pieces and had trouble getting them to fit correctly.  How do you set things up to get those accurate cuts?  Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.SQHappiness is wood chips flying!
July 14, 201214 yr Author Thanks very much. I use an Incra Miter1000se that I spent some time on making sure it is dead accurate. Then I use stop blocks with a set of story sticks to make the stop cuts. I'm crazy busy today but I'll try to post pics next week some time.
July 14, 201214 yr Bill,Thanks so much for the information. Â I have actually looked at the Incra Miter 1000se and was impressed. Â Will watch for your pictures. Â Again, absolutely amazing piece.SQHappiness is wood chips flying!
