July 17, 201213 yr  The little red and gray plane i bought just for it's partsWell, seems it started to look better as i went through it, almost talking to me... Tried some spare parts, just to see IF they would work...Hmmm, just what kind of plane is this, anyway?   Well.....MAYBE IF I were to strip them handles?   maybe clean all that rust off some of the parts????    When I got home from work this morning, needing to unwind a bit, went out to the Back Porch Bench for some "R&R'   Got the handles stripped down to bare wood, got ALL the rust removed.  Stepped back to look things over...I even flattened the sole....Then I put the spare parts back onboard ( BAD MISTAKE) Because, NOW this isn't a "Parts Plane" anymore.   Seems to be a Sargent #4??  I also took it for a test drive on Poplar street...Looks like a "user plane' now?   Guess i'll have to go buy another "parts plane' for the Franckein Plane Project..... July 17, 201213 yr nice job Steve. good luck on your search.Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
July 17, 201213 yr Steve, I see that you ended up with the same problem that I usually do. I'll buy or find what I think is a parts machine, only to find that it might be in better shape than the machine it was to be a donor for. I've had to learn to tell myself that I can't save them all more than oncebut it's not easy to do. That plane turned out real nice! Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum Host Â
July 18, 201213 yr Author Apparently, this was a Sargent #1104.    May have been built for Sears/Craftsman?  Nice solid, little plane. The Iron came from Buck Brothers, @ $3 at Home Depot.   Well, nothing is too good for my planes, right? 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
July 18, 201213 yr Author Some say it is a stanley Victor #1104, others just say Sargent-made-for____plane. Almost hsa a Millers Falls look to it, as well. I'll just call it a Sargent #4, for now. Now, I'll have to buy another "parts plane" to take this one's place. Oh, welll....'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
