July 24, 201213 yr  Is my Union #4G.    G as in Grooved bottom.    Iron was getting a might dull, and I tried out my new stone on it, along with some sandpaper.    Got an almost mirror like shine on the end. Worked on the depth adjuster wheel, and got it to move a lot better. The old "bun" of a cracked knob got replaced as well, with a Black Walnut one.  The bolt that hold the lever cap in place was bottoming out, added a washer to stop that, at least until I can shorten it a bit.   Bolt was from the old, broken frog, wheel was too.  Trying to get them to work with a new frog. Got the plane back together, and tried it outWorking the face grain in Poplar. Like the washer? It is there because the iron would slip backwards.  Wasn't staying tight, unless I really cranked that bolt down.  Not good, so it got a washer.  works much better now.   Before, I could get some thick shavings on edge grainBut the iron would back out on face grain. It will work until I can shorten the bolt.  As for the bottom of this plane? It's groovy.... July 24, 201213 yr Author  There is still a lot of "backlash" in the adjuster.   The tab that goes into the chipbreaker to set the depth of cut, is a might too small.   Either the hole could be half it's current size, or I could put in a bigger yoke.  The frog is a replacement I bought to replace a broken frog that was on it originally.   It works, just could be a little better.  I'll have a look around, to see if I have a better chipbreaker for it.'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
