July 25, 201213 yr  Ok, I had a base, a "Bailey #5" type base.   I also had a "Parts Plane". The base, Igor did good, and a parts planeSo, how about a "mock up" of a Stanley/ Victor #5?There's that red frog again.  Tote is just to fit the bolt, it is an old Great Neck bakelite tote. The iron is a Buck Brothers from HD.  The lever cap, and chip breaker came in a parts swap.  We are thinking the lever cap MIGHT be a Sargent.   Ok one more look, then I'm off the bed, just got off work.Yep, that is a crack in the tote.   The "real" ones will be Walnut.   Hmmm, that red frog though..... August 4, 201213 yr Author  I kept the knob from the parts plane, but the plastic tote just had to go....so, using the "Brand New" Craftsman #3, I prepped some Black Walnut.     Got it drilled and shaped to fit the base.   It took at least four tries to get the bolt locations just right.    I used both my beltsander, and my regular grinder to shape the tote, once it was fitted to the base.  Tote is shaped to fit these old fingers..    A look at it installed... still had a bit of sanding to do, and then a finish of some sort.   The last couple of totes I've made just got a coat of varnish.  Seemed to work on the woods I used. A VANCAMP framer chisel @1-3/8" wide, next to the completed #5 jack plane, aka frankenplane Bailey #5.    been a fun project.... 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
