If you won a new wood shop.................

Featured Replies

I am sure this subject has been discussed before and probably had articles written about it.

If you had the space necessary in a nice shop and won a free set of big work shop machines, what would your choices of  major shop machines?  I do believe that some magazines are biased, so choose as if you really won had your choice.

Such as a table saw.............what brand and why.

Band Saw.....

Etc.

Or do you think that once you get above a certain dollar level, they are all pretty much the same?

Maybe you are already working in your dream shop. Would you make a change?

The table saw and jointer and planer and shaper and slot mortiser would all be Martin.

Why? Because even god wants a Martin. They ain't nuthin' finer.

Band saw: NORTHFIELD

Drill presses?  Bailiagh  16  DP-1000VS.  Maybe get an older powermatic for whore drill.

Lathes:   Maybe OneWay and Powermatic

I'd want a regular machine tool lathe  like a Monarch tool room lathe and a knee mill.

plus the regular assortment of attachments like the Knee mill shaper the rotary table the indexing head  etc.

I'd want a surface grinder too.

And a heat teat oven

I think i would want only a couple of power tools like a nice unisaw, maybe a solid 15" planer (probably a Canadian made General) and a big ol' General bandsaw (Canadian made as well)....but i think everything else would come from lee valley. Just hand me the whole gosh darn veritas collection to be exact. In fact i think i'd make it the whole gosh darn lee valley catalogue for that matter. But i would also choose the location of the shop to be by the lake with big barn doors that open up to a deck that i could move the workbench out onto and do some ww'ing in nature.....

Suddenly i'm feeling a little dissatisfied with the current set up.....thanks a lot.

Oh, and since we are talking dreams here, how about i also get lots of time out in the shop and maybe my wife brings me a pop everynow and then....pinch me.

First thing I'd do is build a building so I could move out of the basement! From there, I'm not sure. Seems no matter what brand you buy, and how much you spend, you can still get a lemon. I have seen the SawStop cabinet saw and it is really nice but I would not want to prompt the mentality that the government should legislate those features on all table saws.

If I won a shop full of tools the first thing I would want is a shop big enough to put them all in so that I could walk around and not bump something or have to move something to do a job. I don't know much about expensive brands, I would me happy with a new unisaw but then I an happy with the old one. I would like a 24" planer with the spiral carbide cutters. I would want a 12" jointer again with the spiral carbide cutters. I have a grizzly planner now so those would be fine, if it were from Powermatic or Delta I would still be happy. I would like a 24" and a 14" bandsaw. A nice 36" to 42" wide body drum sander. A full assortment of hand tools (drills, nail guns, planes, scrapers, chisels, etc.). Dust collection so there is NO dust in the shop and have it outside in an insulated room so I don't hear it run. Hardwood floors in part of the shop for ease on my back. Plugs and dust collection in the floor so I don't have cords and hose to step over. Oneway lathe and maybe a Powermatic as a smaller one to turn on. While I am dreaming, an endless supply of lumber of all types delivers as needed or stored in my hide-a-way. I nice assembly table and a separate finishing room of spraying finish. A new F-250 that gets 60 miles to the gallon (I know we are dreaming). But you can't have a nice new shop and not have a nice new truck to visit all of your woodworking friends in. How else are you going to carry them cut off. And of course the shop needs seasonal conditioning (air and heat). I would need an assortment of nice edge belt sanders, spindle sanders and hand sanders.

I guess there are other things but I don't want to seem greedy.

I sure hope Santa Clause sees this so I don't have to type it again.

I also think I'd want my shop to be portable which would mean I'd have to have won properties in Spain Portugal Italy  Brazil  Chile the USA southern France and I'd need the yacht and the Boeing to move it around and all the money that'd take too, thank you very much.

I'd keep the band saw and possibly the table saw and sell off the rest of the tools... (as I am already comfortable with the tools I work with now) and then I'd put the money towards a Wood Mizer LT24 Hydrolic model... and start sawin logs..Grin.gif

Well first of all I would need the building. Then the following list would suffice.lol

Powermatic Bandsaw 18" or larger, Dust collection system.

Delta Unisaw

Vega bowl lathe

Oneway 2436

Shop Fox 15" planer and 8" jointer (with spiral heads), Drum sander, oscillating drill press

It is fun to dream,

No greater Loves than God, Family, Friends, country, the sight of flying chips and the smell of saw dust.

It's always fun to list this stuff, and to be honest, I'm not sure which tools I would want. I do think that at a certain price, any quality differences disappear and it becomes more of a personla choice. I do know 2 things) the shop would have 3 phase power, and one of the tools would be a Northfield Unipoint RAS. I'm thinking most of the other tools would be a step up in size from what most hobbyists have: 12" TS, 12" (or more) jointer, maybe a 24" planer.

No Ref

And a life time membership at Madam Ho's

I would just be happy wit a shop to be able to put what tools I have in already.  could use a good drill press Not sure what one that work would make me happy a thickness planer would come in handy too. lot of things I don't have and not sure where I would begin.

I'm thrilled with my tools and shop.  If I received tools of a higher quality I'd upgrade them and sell off any extra. I don't need the best tools in the world for a hobby.
