August 2, 201213 yr    Drove out to the pole barn woodshop today.    Had a tote to make for a plane. Got a piece of black walnut down, traced out a pattern, and did the cutting and drilling routine.   Got the bolt hole to fit the mounting hole, after four tries. Grinder and beltsander to shape the tote.  Sharpened a few irons on the planes that needed it. Then test drove each plane.   That is about 17 test drives, People.  Whew!   Got to thinking about a way to hold things for plane work on the bench.    Picked out a particle board of the right size,  added a couple cleats, one above, and one below,  and now I have a Bench Hook.   I can just lay it on the bench, place a board on the hook, and plane away.  Neighbor wanted a small wooden shelf, to put on her wall.   I had a 1x6 x24" and a1x4.     Made shelf support brackets out of the 1x4.   A few french curves to fancy it up a bit.   Fired up the electric Router and cut some stopped sliding dovetails.   Dovetailed the top of the brackets,  cut a little off with a dovetail saw.    Glued it up.  Time to head home.   Hmmm, NO wheels....    Guess I will have to walk home.    Most people, it is just from the garage shop to the house, for a walk.    This shop is SEVEN MILES from my house.    Bit of a stroll. About a two hour hike, good for the heart, and all that. Photos?  Oh we have a BUNCH of Photos!    just trying to process them all right now.    For some reason, I'm a tad bit tired.... August 2, 201213 yr Nice looking tote Steve. Love that walnut. Man you have become the hand plane restorer. Those all look great and making some very nice thin shavings. Thanks for sharing. Seven mile walk? Wow!John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
August 2, 201213 yr Author  Worked on some of the larger planes today as well.   Actually, I worked on all of them.    Those that needed a sharpening, got it.  One needed a tote, got that too.  I had a KK7 to test out..Gave it a ride on some Pine.  Seems to be ready for work, next..a Union #5A, same size as a Stanley #5-1/2.   Not too bad.   Next..When the plane is longer than the test track...This is a Bailey #8c, 24" long 3" wide BIG BOY of a plane.   Of course, the iron needed some work.    Reground the edge, took it on a trip on the beltsander, honing guide wouldn't fit. Went to the sandpaper stretched onto a flat surface routine.   iron will now shave hairs...doesn't do too badly on Pine, either.  Got the Fulton Jack over to the test track as well...as well as a Stanley #6 ( not the rebuilt #6c, it already was tested out) Most of the Big guys were nice and sharp.    One of the smoothers i had set a little deep, but it still passed the test... Moxxon TP anyone? Like it when it just rolls right up.    Easy to clean them up that way...Just having some fun... 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
August 2, 201213 yr Author  Oh, some photos of the Beech shelf I was working on?Trimming the dovetails back to fit into the stopped sliding dovetail slots.  (try saying THAT real fast)   Like the little saw?Fitting the shelf supports I had just trimmed into the beech shelf.  Not too bad a fit.  Slots were done at the router station..and a glue-up of the three parts, yes I did clean up the excess glue.. I had a "lunchbox" to carry home, and this shelf.    Neighbor says she WILL FIND A PLACE to put it!     Seems to like the little shelf. 'and may the road raise up to meet ye' 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
