Friday, August 3rd, What's on Your Woodoworking Agenda?

Featured Replies

Well here we are more than half way through another year and the beginning of the dog days of summer. Seems like the dogs got started early this year with as hot as it has been.

So I have a First Friday event here in Florence, Alabama tonight. Looking forward to it as there is usually a great crowd.

I started working on the restoration of an old chopping block last night. A gentleman brought it by and wanted all the knife marks and stains out of it and make it like new again. I liked the marks and told him that is what gives it character, but he wants to start with new character.

I was also finishing up three new cutting boards and about ready to start assembly on the third of the porch swings I have been working on. Or lets just say I was suppose to be working on. I got a little sick earlier this past month and have been on some medications that the Dr. didn't really want me doing much with the power tools so I have just been doing maintenance on them. Ready to get things back in the swing now.

So what are you Patriot Woodworkers doing this weekend? Will you be in a nice cool shop, doing yard work, Home improvement, HDL, or just hanging out in the cool on the couch?

We love to hear and see what projects you are working on, some come on and post and let us know what you are up to.

Finally got the blanks finished for the salt cellars and pepper grinders. Have the outside of a couple of the salt cellars shaped but everything is a long way from being finished!!

The pepper grinders are trimmed and ready to start the turning/drilling processes.

Then there is the stack of rolling pin blanks waiting to be turned-

ning-img-1138600x450-25928-65.jpg

The couple of pins on the top were started to get a look at the knot proportions and the one towards the front is a glue up of a couple waste pieces as an experiment.

Looks like the old lathe is going to get a workout!

My gosh Lew i have got to figure out a way that i can do something similar, especially on the pepper grinders.

The pepper grinder that I had been working on, I am setting aside, It for me and my limited tools is just too difficult to finish, because i am unable to drill accurate holes and set the screws from an angle.

If anyone wants the grinder, just let me know and I will contact you for shipping arrangements etc.

So anyway, it's finishing 2 pens (one nearly done and will be today barring difficulties.), then starting on some stock replenishing. That should take the entire weekend for me

Here's that grinder

I have an order from a guy in NYC for some walnut cutting boards, trivets and coasters. He has made a couple of orders from me and this one will be my last as I am going to be hanging up the cutting boards and moving onto other things after this order. Have them all glued up, leveled, trimmed to size and the edges routed. What is left to do the final sanding and then putting the mineral oil finish on the cutting brands and trivets and then once those are all done, I will be working on finishing the coasters as why need a coat of natural Danish Oil and then a couple of sprayed on coats of a clear finish. I will be tied up today doing yard work and then tomorrow hosing down the patio to get things ready for a party at our house that my wife is throwing for my 50th. So sunday afternoon I will be doing all the sanding and getting the mineral oil on.

Wow, it looks like everyone is busy.  Winter must be coming becasue I've started my winter project.  I began building new kitchen cabinets for my wife yesterday and it looks like for many days to come.  There are 30 raised panel doors and 7 drawers that I have to build before I rework the cabinet fronts.  Hopefully I can knock the fronts off and replace them with oak.  If not, I'll have to rebuild the entire cabinet.  The cabinets above the range and refrigerator will be total redesigned and built new because we're building in a microwave above the range and a new refrigerator is slated also which is taller.  Will it never end?

After being gone for 3 weeks, there is a lot of vegetative growth (WEEDS!) around the house and shop to be removed and/or killed. Then, there's 26 acres to be mowed. The monsoons came while we were gone and the moisture sure greened up the grass. It's pretty, I just wish it wouldn't grow so darned fast!

Back in the shop by Wednesday....I hope.

Ron that is going to be a great project. Beth is already wanting to see how you do. She may want you all to come for a longer visit if you do a real nice job.

Gene that grass just jumps when you aren't looking at it.

Been thru about half a gallon of TiteBond II! Mimi has already given just about everyone we know sets of these as Christmas presents. Probably give some away as silent auction donations and go from there. Still looking for ideas for Christmas gifts, for 2012.
