A Must See, "Note by Note,The Making of Steinway L1037"

Featured Replies

We recently watched a fantastic movie, The Making of Steinway L1037. What a great watch. It's a fabulous documentary behind the fabrication, or I should say the creation by one of the worlds greatest, if not thee greatest piano manufacturer. Steinway is still made almost entirely by hand, one of the only again if not the thee only manufacturers who do so.

They follow the making of number L1037 from birth, to showroom. It covers everything from the bent laminated carcass to the final tuning. Everyone has a job to do on the assembly floor, and they are very proud of their work. My wife and I were very touched by the folks who build these pianos. If you watch the movie, you'll see one fella who states that the assembly floor is like the United Nations of workers, there are men and women from the Ukraine, Central America, Russia, Germany, and of course Native Born Americans. My wife being from Panama was heartened to see an American company take such pride in their immigrant workers.

There is one fellow their who came from Europe 40 years ago, and still has the same hand plane he brought over from the old country that he uses to shape parts of the Steinway Piano's.

This is a must see documentary about America's Piano, still Made in the USA, and with pride. You'll love it.

And of course what would Steinway be without musicians! In this documentary they cover the vast array of musicians who use the Steinway's, from classical pianist's to jazz to blues and more. They follow some musicians on their quest to find the perfect Steinway for their playing style. As hugely famous as the Steinway's are, they are not admittedly all built equally. They all have their own tone, their own feel, like a guitar. Since they are hand made, no two are alike. It's a beautiful movie. My family and I have Netflix streaming, and it is available on Netflix. And I am sure you can find it in other avenues as well. Here is a little excerpt, watch the whole movie, you'll love it. It has a ton of woodworking in it!
