Wooden American Flag

Featured Replies

Watching the Olympics has me in a patriotic mood so this weekend I decided to do a quick woodworking project rather than restoring a machine.

I decided to make a wooden flag so a quick Google search turned up nothing that I liked, until I came across this photo of an antique wooden flag. The description on the photo said it was fence gate to an old house.

amer_flag_gate.jpgHere's what I came up with. I was originally going to antique it so it looks like the original but don't know if I will now, still debating on it.

I made it from some red oak that I had kicking around from another project.  I wanted a rough sawn look to it so I loosened up the tension on my band saw and opened up the guides a little bit which gave the wood the look I was after.

IMG_1288.jpgIt's kind a hard to tell from the pics but it has a 3 dimensional look to it. There is a 1/4 inch gap between the front of the white stripes and the back of the red stripes, and the same with the blue and red.

IMG_1291.jpgIt was a fun quick easy weekend project and the wife loves it hanging on the wall.

IMG_1290.jpgThanks for looking,

Shane,

I like it the way it is.113.gif

I agree with Larry, I like it like this, too.

Love the 3-D effect.

That's right nice.
Over the years, we've added a few more colonies though.

I like it. Very nicely done, don't change a thing!

I believe that is what you call a true-blue patriotic woodworker right there!

A source of genuine inspiration!  I could not be any more proud being an American!

I always wanted a flag pole for my yard, but didn't have a decent place to put one. So I made one also, mounted at the top front of my garage where it could easily be seen and the light above it came on at dusk, off at dawn. I made it of 2bys and used the band saw to simulate a flowing flag.

Great job on the flag Ron ... Sure puts mine to shame!

Very nice Shane, love the roughsawn wood look!!!

No, sir, it doesn't put yours to shame. Yours is just a different style from earlier time. Mine was made with all intent of representing the flag that I couldn't find a place for. I can guarantee you that if my wife sees yours, she will want one. Unfortunately, I had to leave my flag with my old home when we moved and this guy sets out front. I made him a few years ago and have rebuilt him, he don't weather too well. I made his flag to look as a flag would hang.ning-dsc01254-25839-4.jpg?width=721
