August 7, 201213 yr Any of you put a spiral carbide cutter head in a Craftsman 6 1/8" Jointer? Which one is the best out there or is the Helix the only one that will fit the craftsman? I was considering this but at 399.00 for the Byrd Helix, I could almost put a little more money with it and buy the 8" Girzzly and have a larger jointer.Any Thoughts?John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
August 8, 201213 yr I never understood the need for a wider jointer. My little Cman 6" does every thing I need it to do. If a board needs straightening, I use the planer and a sled or, a router and a box for smaller stuff. The jointer just does edges. So, a Byrd Helix would be of minimal value to me.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. August 8, 201213 yr I wish I could help John, have you located a head that will fit the Craftsman?Your right, you might just want to consider the Grizz 6" brand new when your talking about replacing heads in the Craftsman. The new Grizz will be much quieter then your Craftsman I guarandoggonetee it. MHOJohn MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
August 9, 201213 yr Author The six inch had been fine, just wondering about the 8" too. I use the 6" to flatten one side of every board before going to the planner. Doesn't take but a minute and then they are ready. I actually rarely use it for jointing. I do that with the table saw. All of the cutting boards I make are edge jointed on the table saw.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
