Darn Ball

Featured Replies

Several years ago I made the darning ball in the picture. In case you didn't know, a darning ball is a ball with a handle on it. You pull socks with holes in them over the ball and then you can sew (darn) the sock and it will retain it's round shape. It is beautiful, made of several kinds of exotic wood scraps. Anyway, my wife no longer wants it and I am doing my darnest to repurpose it.

Any  ideas of how I can reuse it and make another cool wood project out of it.

The ball is 2" in Dia

Use for the top of a pepper grinder.

Hollow it out for a small vase.

Cut the ball in half, drill a hole in the curved area of each half and insert a small spindle and you have a base for glass candle holders.

Instead of a candle holder base, what about an off center hole in each half for an ink pen holder for a desk.

Cut a slot in each half to hold business cards, and a hole for a pen for your desk.

Mike's first idea would have been my best idea :)

Then maybe use the spindle as a golf tee?? :)

She no longer wants it! Are you kidding! I'll be your wife Ron8.gif

Seriously though, I am thinking, thinking, thinking, got nothing right now but let me think some more! There should be a ton of re-purpose ideas for a ball but none are coming to me at this moment, must be too early.

There ya go, cut that stem off and put in an eye screw and hang it from a favorite place.

Cat toy is NOT an option lol it's too good looking for that :)

That works too Larry. Smile.gif  Once the stem is cut off, use that flat spot to drill and tap the ball or you can just drill and glue in a ferrule to attach to the shifter.

Sorry John, your offer is rejected.Grin.gif She no longer darns socks, so she don't want it. Cheaper to buy a bundle of new socks, than to spend any time repairing them. I'm glad I submitted the ball for others to see and suggest. It is going  on a walking stick!
