August 20, 201213 yr I found a tiny piece of amboyna burl, it had been tossed aside months ago because i couldn't figure out anything to do with it. I forget what the thing is called exactly but it looked like a small rectangle with different lengths, (a Rhombus maybe?) Anyway, it was just over an inch tall and about 3/4" diameter or so. I have been thinking recently about trying to make a small lidded box and the light dawned on me to use this tiny piece as a knob for the top if the lid. it's now 1 9/32 " tall just under 5/8" wide at the widest point near the tenon. The tenon itself is 1/2" wide x 1/4" tall which should be enough area to glue the knob to the lid top The box itself will probably be made of Maple and the lid will probably be made of Spalted Maple. More as I progress I now see with the pictures that there is a bit of EEE ultra shine that I need to remove from the corners but that's easy. The intended box blank My thanks to our friend Ron Dudelston for gluing the parts together for the blank when I didn't have glue. I added the maple waste block later (I didn't have pine for a wb) Charles Nicholls Site Host nicholls61@att.net Proud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRA
August 20, 201213 yr That's going to be a nice box. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
August 20, 201213 yr Author Thanks Gene, I already have a lid piece in mind too and I'm hoping it goes well with the main piece. Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRA
August 20, 201213 yr That spalted wood (maple?) will go well with ANY piece. It's gorgeous!Contrasting figure, grain or color really adds interest to a piece, IMHO.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton

August 20, 201213 yr Is there a way to seal the wood so the spalting doesn't break away? I used to turn pens with spalted wood but over time the spalted ares wore away.
August 20, 201213 yr Author I did one pen for a friend Mike last year and I only used friction polish to seal it. Eventually the wood did start wearing away, but I now use CA glue and have not had a breakaway problem since. At least not one that a customer informed me of.Mike Dillen said:Is there a way to seal the wood so the spalting doesn't break away? August 30, 201213 yr Author Just another little something that I turned from a piece of scrap Cherry Burl. For those that are finding it hard to figure out what it is, It's a bullet, say 9mm or .45 (not exact size) that can be used as a pedant but would need to be tapped for that. It was just something that came to mind as I was truing it up, trying to think of what to do with it Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRA
