I am being Challenged!

Featured Replies

Seems on another site, I have a reputation of rehabbing "Lost Cause" planes.  Now, I have been challenged to restore one of the ugliest #4 handplanes ever seen.   Looks almost like it had fallen into the same vat the Joker did.  Plane is on the way to my shop.  Be here in a day or so.     Looks even worse than a certain Union #4G I did back in the spring...ning-sdc12436-25114-79.jpg?width=750Already have new handle bolts on the way for the "new" plane.    The one in the picture?  It's been doing enough work around the shop, I had it back in for a tune up awhile back..undefinedGrin.gif

Computer is acting up today.    Try again on a picture...ning-sdc12921-25127-65.jpg?width=721This is the same plane, just re-furbished back up.    The Stanley(???) #4c that is coming in the mail, is about the same size.   MIGHT be fun to do, maybe a weekend's work????Grin.gif

The first picture won an Award......for the Ugliest Plane of the Month, ( August)   Plane is from about 1915 era...

That's one unhappy plane

May be ugly now, but no more later !!! Best of luck with it. Cannot wait to see its former glory and beauty !!!

Ok, box arrived this morning.   Opened it up to...ning-sdc13263-25123-9.jpg?width=721U. G. L. Y.!   WOW!     This might take a little while...Grin.gif  Got out a tub ( NOT ONE WORD about the colour, thank you) and put the bigger "Chunks" in the "Soak Cycle"....ning-sdc13268-25123-76.jpg?width=721and started in on the small frys... ning-sdc13269-25123-96.jpg?width=721The bolts were soaked a bit, then wire wheeled.    I held each small bolt and washer with a pair of Visegrips.    Otherwise, they tend to fly off into The twilight Zone.    Lever cap is a bit pitted, but usable, chipbreaker?    We will see.   As for the Iron..ning-sdc13271-25123-52.jpg?width=721I will try to sharpen it back up, but I think a Buck Brothers 2" iron will replace it, later.   As for the "Woodwork"?    No tote came in the box.   The front knob is toast, even has a broken bolt still stuck inside it.    never fear, we have a "fix" at hand...ning-sdc13266-25123-20.jpg?width=721I also have "new" bolts on the way.     $8 for two Stanley style bolts.    Well, it has begun.     Might be awhile.......

Solution is a Witch's Brew.     Don't have anything to "shock"it with.

Got the Frog adjustor bolt out of the frog, and spun clean.   Brass wheel is off, and cleaned up.    Working on the rest of the frog's mess.     Got a start on the base.      This is a Bailey #4c, with three patent dates, frog adjuster screw, and "Stanley" stamped on the (now freed up) lateral lever.    Still need a way to get two stubs of handle bolts out, since I have "new' ones on the way.   back later with more scary pictures ( hide the kids)

Day One is in the books.    A little "tease?"ning-sdc13281-25120-98.jpg?width=721Handles are just sitting there, no bolts yet.     I got most of the nasty gunk off, along with 75% of the rust.   Got most of the bolts out, and cleaned up.   ( Momma, HIDE the Kids!)ning-sdc13279-25120-67.jpg?width=721Underside of the frog, with a few other parts...ning-sdc13275-25120-61.jpg?width=721Underside of the base, when it shows up....

This "Challenge" came from the "Mob" over at Lumberjocks.    Don W. had a plane he didn't think he could restore.  Since I'm known to favour the Rusty& Crusty ones, he issued a Challenge to have this plane restored.   I took him up on the job.    Dang this is one messy plane.....

Steve unless I missed it, What chemical do you use to soak the parts in?

  • Author

I call it a Witch's Brew.     Half a can of PB Blaster, half a spray can of a Mold Cleaner from work,  some soap powder, a little MOGAS, and a glass of water.   Seemed to loosen all the crud up.  And there was a LOT of crud to remove.    As for that tub of brew, well, there is some Poison Ivy around the house......

Very interesting concoction. Thanks for the recipe Steve!
