August 25, 201213 yr I'm just wondering how much to pay for some hand planes. Stopped by a small "junk" store this morning and they had 4 older hand planes in fair shape. Wanted $10 to $12 for them. Price didn't seem bad at all. One was a Stanley Handyman, other I didn't see a brand.Seeing how Steve brings his "rust buckets" back to life I'm thinking about getting these, just because. May have to go back for pics and see about "making a deal" on them! (cheap) Harry Brink Bulldog Woodworking Montana
August 25, 201213 yr The handymans i have bought, the rusty ones anyway, were $8 or less.   You might try a"package deal"@ say $5 a piece, and see what they counter offer.  There is plenty of "How to" around here, and over at Lumber Jocks. Rusty & Crusty is one thing, but if there are broken, or missing parts, THAT could be trouble.   Ebay does have "Parts Planes' now and then, but they tend to get costly.  There are some people out there that will tear a plane apart, just to "part it out" to others.   To get all the parts back......well, there is the money issue. Try them out, get some pictures, we'll see if we can help you along this slippery slope....;-)) 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
August 27, 201213 yr It takes a special kind of insanity to love rusty old tools that need serious restoration before they can be used.Good on ya.
August 27, 201213 yr Author These aren't in too bad of shape. The wood on one needs some tlc, one is missing the front knob and all of them need to be sharpened and adjusted. The price isn't bad and who knows, I may feel the need to try them out.The one I found in my Dad's tool box is a different story. May have been out in the rain at one time. This one I'll work on to bring back to life. I "played" with it when I was a kid.Harry BrinkBulldog WoodworkingMontana
