August 27, 201213 yr Hi Everyone Here are a couple of photos of my newest commission. This block is 17â€wide x 14.5†tall and 14†deep. Made from cherry and tiger maple with ebony accents. Weighs in at 45 lbs. Holds 59 knives, 3 steels and a pair of shears. And yes there was a lot of scrolling involved in cutting out the 60 slots for the blades. Used a #5 skip tooth blade. Mike'why buy it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
August 27, 201213 yr I love the beast Mike!!! Another spectacular knife block.Do you have any plans for these Mike? And those slots are scrolled! Man you do some nice and tight straight work on that saw. I would have thought they would be routed and squared off by hand. But to scroll it out, spectacular work Mike. So, how is the business going? Any restaurants yet or custom out fits? Thanks for sharing MikeJohn MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops

August 27, 201213 yr Author Thanks GuysTo John-Business is good. Fun Stuff!!!Mike'why buy it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
August 27, 201213 yr Author Hi Joe The slots are actually scrolled in 3/4" stock face pieces using a #5 skip tooth blade.as the photo below shows The face pieces are then assembled and the routed blade slot pieces are added to fill in behind the face pieces until everything is filled in then the top is glued in place as shown in the next photo. Lots of very precise cutting and fitting as you can see. The 3 round holes are drilled for the steels and the square slots match up with the front holes Joe Lyddon said: Mike, That is SO COOL! I cannot visualize how you "scrolled" the slots! Do you have a (at least) 14" scroll saw blade? Â LOL Could you please elaborate on that? Those round points... Â are they holes... or just accented circles? The way you made sub-blocks and glued them all together looks SO COOL! ... and the inlaid banding is an excellent touch of Class! The most beautiful Knife Block I have ever seen! It would be appreciated if you could go into some of the details on how you did it... Really... a COOL piece! Thank you very much!
August 27, 201213 yr I have been wanting to try turning some tap handles myself but I don't know much about it yet. I have seen 3 or 4 different ways to make them but nobody mentions length or size of ferrule or diameter of the stock. So I looked around on ebay & youtube for some that are hand made and all seem to be around 8" tall but not much else is mentioned.Mike Mathieu said:Thanks GuysTo John-Business is good. August 27, 201213 yr Author Hi Charles The tap handles that I am working on will incorporate the company logo done as an Intarsia but the total length will be 10 inches from the top of the logo to where it screws in. Here is a pic of the logo used. This will be 4" in diameter which means the letters are 1/4" tall. Talk about a challenge!!!Charles Nicholls said: I have been wanting to try turning some tap handles myself but I don't know much about it yet. August 27, 201213 yr Thanks for posting and thanks for explaining how you cut the slots. Great workmanship and something to file away in my memory bank!www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
August 27, 201213 yr Thanks much Mike. Mine wont be quite that elaborate. They will be rounded similar to a cane but tapered, and maybe have a bit of a wave to some of them once I get me a sanding drum for the lathe and perhaps a wood burner, for some basic wood burning for design.Mike Mathieu said: Hi Charles The tap handles that I am working on will incorporate the company logo done as an Intarsia but the total length will be 10 inches from the top of the logo to where it screws in.
