Lathe Dust Hood. Possible solution!

Featured Replies

For those that seek a solution to the ever present problem of collecting shavings and dust while turning check out this gentleman's solution: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/70525#comment-1340981

Due to it's curved shape it may help extract more debris while turning. It's easily built and looks to be more efficient than the box shaped hood that I have from Woodcraft. Uses a plastic bucket, couple pieces of wood and a couple of magnates.

I like that idea. However it would require a big vacuum to be effective. That is something I wish I had. Also the solid cover would restrict light and that is a must when you are working with something small. I don't think there is a really effective way of dust/chip suppression, but a rig like this would be as close as anything I have seen

Looks like a great way to control dust for those that are turning larger items.

Thanks,

Ron I agree, my thought woud be to purchase a clear lexan cylinder to build on. I will start with a small plastic bucket

First to test to see if the round shape works better. One could always put in a clear window with the bucket and save the cost.

Mike,

It looks like it should work to me.

Besides the price wouldn't be bad.

After I get some of my other projects completed I'll tackle it myself, maybe between us we can improve on the concept.

I was wanting to cut and use a 5 gal bucket. Now I will have to try it out.

Yep Larry I think it will and your right it should be cheep to build. the things that will cost the most are the rare earth magnets and the dust port which in themselves are very expensive.
