August 29, 201213 yr  small box came in the mail today.   Very small box.  It had two block planes inside.all black is a Stanley #110, the Red & Blue one is a Stanley Handyman #120.    Things look nice, don't they?   Hmm, went to lap the sole of the 110,   didn't look right...Ah, that's the problem.   A cracked mouth.   shame, because the iron is a Sweetheart iron, making this about 1920s era?   The Red& Blue one?Looks good!  Is that cracked mouth a big deal??? we'll see.   I did have the sides cleaned up, the irons cleaned up. Was going to sharpen them, but the honing guide is out at the Pole Barn Woodshop. Counting a Dunlap from a few weeks ago, these tow new ones, and the rest of the "Herd"head count is now at EIGHT!  Time to thin this bunch a bit?    Three #120s?     A Millers Falls 700 , a stanley 9-1/2, a Sargent #107. a Stanley #110. and a Dunlap 220 sized plane.   About like sayingI have too many #5 Jack planes in the shop.    I do have four #5s, and a Union #5A.   Just enough...;-)) Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
August 30, 201213 yr Author  One of these is a Stanley #110, the rest?????another view??and from the side..All of them are by Stanley.   just gets a little confusing about which type is which number.... Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
September 1, 201213 yr Author  A look at some of the blades in this group..Left to right:  Pre-Sweetheart iron from a Stanley #120,  A Sweetheart iron from the Stanley #110, and a post- sweetheart Handyman iron for the Red& Blue H1249.   Which leaves a short, un-marked thing that might just be an iron...it came out of a short, little block plane that MIGHT be an earlier #120?  Maybe, maybe not.Like that wheel under the cap? Seems most of the ones in this group have that wheel...with the H1249 being the "odd-ball' of the group.  Even the bases are just a bit different.  #120s used a lever to adjust the depth of cut, at least on later ones..The black base is a 120, according to the stamp on the front porch.  Handyman is a little different.   Next up?   Sharpen all these irons up, and give that #110 a new paint job.   Not going to fret about the cracked mouth, but then, I could always get another base....;-)) Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
September 2, 201213 yr Author  Went to work on the irons today, as well as a few bodies.    Got the cap iron for that #110 shined up, and the Sweetheart iron was sharpened upCracked mouth doesn't seem to affect it.  Debating on a new base, or just call it "Good E-Nuff".    Next on the "block"...I am not sure who made this little guy, might be a stanley, or a Union, or even a Sargent.   Does nice work, though...This "big" plane is a Stanley #120 ( stamped right on the front deck) with a pre-sweetheart iron, no less.  Sharpened up nicely.  And the fourth of the group?Yep, it IS a Stanley, a Handyman #1249 in fact.   Got the number stamped right on the iron.  I already have all the Handyman Bench planes, so this is a start on the block planes.   iron sharpens up real nice.... While the Test Track was up on the bench,  "kit" of a plane was sent along the track, just to see how a pile of old parts would work out..Not too bad... this is one of two "Project Planes".   This one was made from a pile of old parts, the other one is a $5 Challenge Plane...Would have been more shavings, but the wind was kicking up a bit.   Imagine "Gossemer Shavings"  just floating across the back yard.   Been a fun morning... September 2, 201213 yr Steve very nice man, sorry I did not see this earlier! Been really busy buddy. My opinion on the cracked mouth? Fill it with Weld Bond, is that the name? And sand it flush, that will take any risk of the crack digging into the work plus after time the weld will adopt a similar patina as the metal and look purty dang close to natural. Great work man, I love watching you bring these back to life.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
