August 30, 201213 yr  seems I am getting a few parts laying around of other project planes.   A base here, a tote there, a couple old knobs.   Taking up needed space on the bench!   Time to see IF I can take some of these parts, and make a plane out of them... An old base, with a new coat, or three of paint.   Bearing areas will get a scrape cleaning, bolt holes are still filled with a cleaner.   A few cuetips and they will be ready for some bolts.  Had a tote..Old bakelite one, at that. Gave it a new coat of black paint.    The later Stanleys were painted on their handles, and the latest ones are black plastic.  This will be a "Type 20" or so plane.   As for a front knob?Yeah, yeah, I know, the later Stanleys had "High" knobs.    I am building this plane, and all i have are low kanoobies.    Just an old Union low knob, seen better days, had a chip-out in the base.  Ground to base to fit the ring on the base, chip-out went away.    Knob will get a Stainless Steel Phillips headed bolt.  Won a set of parts on Ebay last night.   A newer style frog, to match this base, a chipbreaker and iron, and a "plated" lever cap.    Plating is about half gone, so, the rest will follow until that lever cap shines like new.   I has the "kidney shaped hole" of the later Stanleys. I'll clean up and re-paint the frog, sharpen the iron, and mate it to the chipbreaker, and away it will go.   Cost? maybe $12, counting shipping.   Should have a Stanley #4 type 20/21 out of this mess.    Smooth bottom at that...:-)) Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
August 30, 201213 yr Great job Steve. In my spare time. am going to have to try making knobs so that when someone needs one, I can just make it for them. I just need the dimensions of the knob required, or any knob in general that would be used on a particular plane.Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRA
August 30, 201213 yr Author  There are high knobs, and there are the low knobs.    Dependig on when the plane was made.   Also depends on which maker of planes made them.    Seen some with a fancy ring around the bottom, some tall and skinny ones, and a few that look just like a burnt Onion.    Short and fat...  some, like that Union knob have a champfered top for a screw head, about like a normal wood screw.  Stanley made a 7/16' hole for the brass "nut" to sit in.  Just depends... August 31, 201213 yr Author Ihave been watching that box load of stuff, just can't swing the $25+ for it right now.     Maybe when another such cache comes along.   Seems to be one a month, lately.   Anymore, IF i need a wood knob, or tote, I have the stuff to make a few... a KK7 with new Black Walnut handles.... August 31, 201213 yr That's ok Just letting it be known that if i know what the dimensions are I can probably whip one up. I'd even try one in a burl. I can't swing the $25 either until something sells. I'll be watching both auctions though.steven newman said: Ihave been watching that box load of stuff, just can't swing the $25+ for it right now.     Maybe when another such cache comes along.   Seems to be one a month, lately.   Anymore, IF i need a wood knob, or tote, I have the stuff to make a few... a KK7 with new Black Walnut handles.... August 31, 201213 yr Author  Just a teaser...Rest of the parts are on the way.  Seems that parts for a #5 Jack plane will fit a #4 Smooth plane just fine.   Both use a 2" wide iron.  As long as it is the same style frog, should be a "drop it in" sort of thng.   Total cost? About $12 or so... August 31, 201213 yr Oh, noooooooooo - I have to get my eyes checked. Â When I saw the title, I was thinking - "Wellllll, put them pack on the plain". September 1, 201213 yr Author  This will wind up being a shake-the-box sort of thing.   Almost like getting a kit.   The frog will need a little work, and some new paint.  Lever cap will need a good brushing.   Some of the plating is missing, so, the rest will go as well.    Sorry, all I had were a couple low knobs. One was a close fit.   Ground the bottom for a better fit into the base ring, and a chip out was ground off as well.   That old bakelite tote was from a Great Neck #4.    painted up nicely... September 1, 201213 yr Author Rest of the "kit" arrived this morning.   Cleaned things up, and started to install some parts...Cleaned and lapped flat the frog.  Shined the bolts up.   Cleaned the iron and chipbreaker, and polish the lever cap.Time for a test drive? An over all view?Wasn't quite as bad as the "Challenge Plane".   Stanley #4, smooth bottom.   Don't really know what "type" it is, don't really care.
