September 3, 201213 yr I hope everybody is having a great holiday . I've been in shoot most of the day cutting ornaments. I'll post some pics later in the week. Hopefully with summer winding down we'll see some more a activity around here, I've been feeling like the lonely Maytag man around here ,talking to myself. Feel free to discuss something, after all this is your forum.
September 3, 201213 yr Actually I just got done making another of my hidden compartment key chains. This one is Redwood Burl. I really like the color on this wood, and wish I had more of it. September 3, 201213 yr Thanks, it has my normal CA finish, I think it really helped to bring out the color.Greg Aksdal said:Wow that looks great Charles

September 3, 201213 yr Thanks, Indeed it would. The cool part is that I can make it as long as a person wants it to be, I'd just need a longer tube and longer piece of wood.Mike Dillen said:Very nicely done Charles. September 4, 201213 yr I've just been too busy with work. On my days off we re-group and get ready for the next go around. I have 2 days off together this week so maybe I'll get some time to cut out some of the cars and tree hangers.Only 74 more days until full retirement, then I will be able to work on my honey do list and make some saw dust!Harry BrinkBulldog WoodworkingMontana
September 4, 201213 yr Hang in there Greg. I'll be working on some boxes and a few baskets as soon as I get some time. Plus Christmas isn't too far off so I have to get some presents put together so I don't get short on time like every year past.www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops

September 7, 201213 yr Ok, Greg.I did get some time to work on a candle holder that Steve Good put out this week. Just have to cut the circle for the bottom. Question is-how and what type of finish would be good on this? It's made from 1/4" oak which is looking very good! I've used clear spray paint on some butterflies I cut out but I think these would look better with something else. I dipped some key chains in poly but it collected in the corners. Looked ok but I want a better look to these. Any suggestions?? Oh, by the way, my wife saw it and wants me to make more for Christmas presents.
September 7, 201213 yr HI Harry, When you get a chance, can you provide a link to the Steve Good article or a picture of what you have done so far?If it isn't going to get stuck in a corner or crevace, I would use a mineral oil or Mineral oil and wax combination as a rub on., or perhaps a spay finish.Harry Brink said:Ok, Greg.I did get some time to work on a candle holder that Steve Good put out this week. September 7, 201213 yr Author Harry, I use either BLO or Danish oil exclusively, they both work great and are simple to use. Only if it is going to be in contact with food or handled by kids will i use mineral oil, simply because it seems to dry out too soon and need refinishing. I will usually use Krylon clear acrylic for a top coat, it's available in gloss or satin. Deft is also a good clear spray top coat. Harry Brink said:Ok, Greg.I did get some time to work on a candle holder that Steve Good put out this week. Just have to cut the circle for the bottom.
