Delta Model No.1282 Belt Drive Buffing Head

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Today I'll be showing you all my newest " Old Machine".

This was first offered in the Delta catalogs in 1937 for $9.85, there was a grinder offered that used the same basic head the previous year. It had the same cast iron wheel guards as the motorized grinder.

The one I have here dates from 1939-40 as it has a serial number of 3-6168 the price in 1939 was $11.85.

I had seen this item offered for sale on another website a couple of weeks or so ago, and had sent the seller a message about it. I hadn't heard anything from him until late last week when he contacted me asking if I was still interested in it, as another person decided to back out. I told him yes I was but could not afford it at the present time. He sent me back a message telling me that he would give it to me if I have a use for it, as it was missing a couple of parts. Well I sure couldn't pass that offer up, so here it is.ning-100-0565-24449-1.jpg?width=750

As you can see in the above photo it is missing the arbor flange and nut on the right side.

But the story of this machine got better last night. I recieved a message from the seller telling me it was my lucky day. He had found the missing arbor flange and nut!  The nut is listed as " special nut" in the parts diagram, and is an odd size .679 diameter x 28 threads per inch left hand thread.

This is a belt driven unit, and the belt can be ran through the bottom or back by removing the cover in the above photo.

The above photo shows a previous owners modification to the shaft ends. Sometime in it's past the shafts had been turned down to 1/2", they were originally a 5/8" acme threaded shaft. This will not bother me.

This same head unit was also used on Delta's Belt Grinder that knife makers were so fond of. It had a longer shaft to allow the wider contact wheels for running a sanding belt.

My intention is to use this head to make a combination machine that I can do buffing, and sanding with by just changing out parts.

Hi Everyone,

I recieved an envelope in the mail today with the arbor flange and nut. So I now have both inner flanges and nuts.

Also while looking through some boxes for parts to use with this I found a switch that I had forgotten I had. It is the proper switch and plate for these old grinders and buffers.

ning-100-0572-24452-5.jpg?width=721 I've been doing a little filing to clean up the parting lines on the castings. This is so I can get the switchplate to mount flat.

I'm also removing the parting line where the Delta emblem goes. I will be using a decal in place of the original emblem. The decal will be of the original emblem used when Delta first introduced these in 1937. It looks like this.

I'm still looking through some boxes, to see what other goodies I have that I can use with this project.

Of course I'm finding everything but what I'm looking for!

Thanks Claude,

With me it's a case of having more time than money.

The machines I redo are redone to be used.

Most end up costing less than half the price ( including rebuild ) that buying a new machine would.
