September 7, 201213 yr I found this at a yard sale today. It's a Stanley Bailey #3 corrugated. Not sure what it's worth but it appears to be in good shape. No cracks on the body or wood parts and all the parts are there, no major pitting or corrosion. The iron is in good shape but in need of a good sharpening. A sticker on it said pre 1922. I paid $15.00. Did I pay too much? I looked on several sites but prices seem to vary widely. www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
September 7, 201213 yr First let me say that I don't know a lot about planers, but for a pre 1922 I don't think you paid too much at all. There is one on eBay that i just saw that is in original box, looking nearly new for a starting bid of $139 and buy now for $165. So if that is a true indication of it's value, I would say you got a bargain by the way yours looks.  Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRA
September 8, 201213 yr Mike, I don't know much on plane prices, but I'd be willing to bet that a similar new one would cost a lot more and have plastic handles and knobs. Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum Host
September 8, 201213 yr $15 is about the going rate.  The two #3s that I have are smooth on the bottom.  I do have two #4s that are grooved, though.  IF the stamping on the iron has a heart shaped item, with SW in it, then it's about 1920-29 era,   A "triangle logo" where everything stamped forms a triangle is from before that.  That "Challenge Plane" is a type 11, with a SW iron, the Shake a box kit plane is after that...Shake a box kit's iron, and..the Challenge plane's iron.    Now, IF you had found a stanley #2 with the groovy bottom, THEN we are talking serious cash money.   You did just fine... September 8, 201213 yr Mike, at 15 bucks you can't loose! I love that No. 3. Great size and with corrugation, while the corrugation is useless, it adds to it's looks and character, I love the "C" planes. Great find buddy, and congrats!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops

September 16, 201213 yr 15 bucks is good for that plane. I really like my 3s and even though I don't need another one I would have had a hard time leaving that one behind. Good score Sir. P.S. Hans Brunner Tools has some pricing. I think there is some info on Hand Plane Centeral. MarkGood, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
