September 12, 201213 yr I have been working on our master bedroom renovation for awhile now. Things got slowed down due to life happening including getting pneumonia twice as well as other stuff. So I finally got the spray finish done on both the headboard and the top mount sliding door that will go between the master bedroom and master bath. I made them out of reclaimed doug fir that came from an old building from the 1800's. The finish that I used was a seal coat of blonde shellac and a top coat of "General Finishes High Performance Water Base Clear Finish" in satin all sprayed. The top coat sprayed really well and leveled nicely filling in some of the course grain so that it would hold the splinters in as this doug fir splinters badly. It got 3 heavy coats and turned out well. We have had our bedroom furniture since the 1990's and while functional, it is very dated. My wife wanted more of an older rustic feel for the bedroom and the big headboard/mirror/nightstands/pedestal bed just wouldn't cut it. We have a 6 drawer dresser that matches the old headboard that I am going to renovate by putting on a new top and drawer fronts as well as redoing the sides and trim to be more rustic. Here is a "before" photo of what our old set looked like. Here are some photos of the new stuff we put in. Note: we will be retexturing and painting down the road along with new trim and crown moulding, but I had to get this installed first as I had to bang the wall up some mounting the headboard. the headboard is hung using some 1/4" aluminum cleats 36" long attached to some studs so it is very strong and low profile. Once hung I put in some screws through the bottom of the headboard into the studs so this will not go anywhere.  I installed 2 lamps with an antique brass finish that my wife liked. We will probably change out the the lamp shades with something else down the road. My wife wanted to get something different for our night stands, so we went down to some antique stores and she found this old child's school desk (circa 1880's thru 1930's) and this interesting  storage box with a hinged flip top with some alligator skin textured type material (circa 1930's thru 1940's). I was going to refinish the desk, but my wife wanted it left with the original finish. They both work well. September 12, 201213 yr Author The shades are pretty spectacular, aren't they?We bought the house new in construction and the house did not come with any window coverings. So we decided to get the same blinds from Home Depot as they were fairly inexpensive and looked decent and the majority of the windows were he same size. The plan was to replace them as we got rooms decorated down the road. Well, we are 11.5 years down the road and we haven't replaced a single one yet. Once done in Master Bedroom my wife wants to put in drapes and sheers while keeping the blinds in our bedroom. They really help with insulation with the hot summers that we have.Gene Howe said:Very nice job on the head board. And, the desk and alligator box are inspired. September 13, 201213 yr Author I do have to say that it was a great bed with great storage, but I was glad to see it go. There wasn't a single piece of solid wood in the whole thing. It was all particle board with red oak veneer. When we moved into our house 11.5 years ago, I had to put in a number of screws and L-brackets and additional cross supports just to hold the pedestal base together. I broke the whole thing up a hammer to take to the dump and it filled my entire truck bed.John Morris said:There it is!!! The alternating saw kerfed headboard that Allen alternated on accident! September 13, 201213 yr Allen, I was complimenting the LAMP shades. I honestly didn't even notice the windows. Hey, our bedroom has the same blinds. Keeps the sun out and provides privacy. What else do ya need?Allen Worsham said:The shades are pretty spectacular, aren't they?
September 13, 201213 yr Author Gene,Sorry for my misunderstanding. It comes with the territory of being a husband. :-)The lights were a bit of an afterthought as I had already started to build the headboard and had the basic frame done. So we had to find some lights that would fit the width of the side frame pieces as well as not costing a lot of $$ the prices of some that she liked were close to $100 each which was a no-go. She liked the style and the color of the "antique brass" finish, but she was not really thrilled with the lamp shades that came with them. But since these are standard size she can shop around to find something else if she wants as you can buy them from Home Depot, Lowes, etc.. My job was to get it mounted and wired in and she can go from there. As long as I got some light to read by I am happy. Gene Howe said:Allen, I was complimenting the LAMP shades. September 13, 201213 yr I like the idea of lights mounted to the head board. We have lamps on bedside tables. I can't count the times I've knocked mine over in my sleep. But, our head board is part of a 1950's Early American cherry bedroom suite that we inherited. No place on it to mount lights. I can't bring myself to replace the head board. Thought of it often. Just can't do it. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
