One Dollar Bill?

Featured Replies

After a morning of being prodded and scanned  at the Hospital,  I went for a walkout.    Checked out a "new" Thrift store.     Nope, no good deals in that one, rusty old saws @ $8?     Ah, not for me...

Went to another store, got to looking around, found something rusty looking back at me. ning-sdc13433-24041-18.jpg?width=75016" long each side is 7/8" wide.    Each side?   well, yeah, when you are a ...ning-sdc13434-24041-29.jpg?width=750when it is a Corner Chisel.    "How Much?"     "$1 + tax"     "Sold!"  walked home with this little guy, and a book from the Library.     Handle will need some work..ning-sdc13435-24041-76.jpg?width=750Well , maybe, just turn a new one?ning-sdc13436-24041-70.jpg?width=750I'll use what is left as a pattern.    Spent most of the afternoon cleaning the "iron works"...ning-sdc13438-24041-35.jpg?width=750backside looks better..ning-sdc13439-24041-34.jpg?width=750so does the "business' side.     Did i say this was a big chisel?ning-sdc13440-24041-79.jpg?width=750That's a Stanley #110 beside it.     Still need to make the new handle, with a hoop of some sort, and learn how to sharpen a corner chisel.    Not too bad a day...

Looks fully restorable to me and that's not Chinese steel either!

Nuttin wrong with that handle, Arlin. Looks like it's good for another 40 whacks, at least. :-)

Seriously, that's a gracious offer.

Steve, that is actually a very nice chisel man! Any markings on it?

Re: all

I waited until well down the street before I laughed a bit.

I think I'll try the turning myself, on this one, thanks anyway.

Nope, have to supply my own drill bit. Maybe a 3/4", or 7/8" bit?

No markings at all.  Might have worn away, or just rusted into the rest of the pitting.   Back is nice and straight, no bends.    Someone had ground a relief from the edge back up the sides, for about an inch.    I will look up the sharpening stuff, after the Doctor visit today.

Heart Doctor gave me a "clean bill of health, however, need to see a "Lung" guy next week.    Ok, making some progress on this $1 chisel...ning-sdc13443-24045-27.jpg?width=721One edge is looking decent...ning-sdc13442-24045-12.jpg?width=721other edge is a little behind.    Still a work in progress.   Took it out for a Test Drive in some old 2x pine...ning-sdc13441-24045-74.jpg?width=721Not bad for the first time...

Still to go 1), finish the sharpening, and 2)  turn a new handle.    #2 will be IF and when I can get to the Pole Barn Shop, where the lathe is.    I have  some blanks in Beech, and an old dead Apple tree in the backyard.     Wonder if it would miss a slice or two?    Also have to find a hunk of old pipe, to make a hoop for the end.

One other project in the works,  let you know later about that one.....

Glad to hear you got a good report! Hope the same for the lungs!

Nice looking edges on that $1 chisel.

See...I tole you you wouldn't need no new handle......for a while. :-)

Got some shop time in today, worked over a few things.     Got a blank of beech in to the lathe..ning-sdc13444-24042-34.jpg?width=721Turned on the lathe for a few minutes...ning-sdc13445-24042-2.jpg?width=721Not too bad...   Next, a little Hammertime!ning-sdc13446-24042-70.jpg?width=721Had to drive things home.   Got out a small can of Gelstain...ning-sdc13454-24042-2.jpg?width=721 "Cherrywood" is the flavour.     Cut some old pipe...ning-sdc13455-24042-8.jpg?width=721And I think this "little' chisel is about done.    Did find a Name Stamp, along one side.    "P. S. & W. Co."     Hardware Company up in the Boston, MA.  area.   Remember, this was just a dollar bill...
