September 14, 201213 yr Today I got the sliding door between the Master Bedroom & Master Bath completed and installed. The door is 36" wide made from reclaimed Doug Fir that came from a building made in the 1800's. The door was given on the front side a seal coat of blond shellac and then 3 coats of "General Finishes High Performance Water Based Finish" in satin. The back side just received a seal coat of blond shellac as it will be painted down the road to match/compliment the bath. The over head sliding door hardware I bought through Home Depot as it was cheaper to go through them as opposed to buy direct from the manufacturer. Here is a link for the hardware that I used: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=100658033&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&MERCH=REC%2d%5f%2dproduct%2d1%2d%5f%2d100658056%2d%5f%2d100658033%2d%5f%2dN#.UFK9tULN7dk The install was really pretty easy to do. The hardest part was just drilling and mounting the hardware to the wall. Once I got my my measurements squared away, I had to find and mark the studs and then drill the holes in the aluminum rail and then attach it to the wall making sure that it was level. Once hung, it was a breeze to get the door into the channel and then do the final adjustments. I will be making a wood valance to cover up the aluminum rail. I do not know yet if I will make it from the same reclaimed wood or if we will use the same trim that we will use for the crown in the room. The door slides very nice and smooth. The most important thing is that my wife is happy. Here is the door in both the open and closed positions. This is the backside from the bathroom. It will be painted when my wife figures out the colors. Â Allen Worsham Corona, CA allenworsham@earthlink.net 'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. Vernon McGee
September 14, 201213 yr Wow Allen that turned out really nice. And hey as you said, she likes it and that is the most important part. Are you planning on putting any hardware on the door and if so do you already have something picked out?John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
September 14, 201213 yr Author Don't know yet about hardware. On the inside we are talking about just putting on a pull strap or cord. I can't put on a handle that sticks out more than a 1/2" as it would hit the door frame. I could put a recessed pull like on a closet sliding door, but we don't really like the looks of it. Â On the outside we need to find something that would fit in with the rest of the room. So for now we are just letting it hang there. We don't need to have a lock on it either as this door is more decorative than necessary as we had no door for the past 11.5 years.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. September 14, 201213 yr Author To follow-up on the hardware.I tracked down some "dummy" hinges and a door pull out of forged iron which I ordered that will match in real well with this door in design and sizing. I can't post pics but here are the web links for the pull and hinges.http://www.houseofantiquehardware.com/strap-hinges-heart-dummy-ironhttp://www.houseofantiquehardware.com/antique-handles-heart-forged-ironAllen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. September 14, 201213 yr You must be on your iPad. I hate that when I use it I can't post pictures. I hope one day they will fix it so the site is iPad friendly.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
