Friday, September 14th, What's on your Woodworking Agenda This Weekend?

Featured Replies

Fall is in the air and football season has kicked off. I love the feel of the mornings right now. Sky is blue and the air is cool and it just makes you want to get going.

Speaking of the fall of the year this is a great time to get into the shop and turn out some nice projects. Not too hot and not too cold, just right for spending the day or evening with the tools.

You all know this weekend would be a great time to get that turning project submitted for the Patriot Woodworker Turning Contest. I know we have a lot of turners out there and many of you have turned some really nice projects. Pick one out and enter it into the contest. That is a very nice set Easy Wood Tools up for the winner and then just think your project will help raise money for Home's for Troops.

I will be picking up some lumber this weekend and putting it in my storage barn. Hoping to get it all done. Got some maple to pick up, approximately 500-600 bd ft and about 1000 bd ft of cedar. Probably won't get a lot of shop time, but I love the smell of all that lumber and enjoy getting it put away in the hideout.

I did work on a few cutting boards last night and posted them in another thread. I have a few more to get cut out and then it is back to trying to finish up orders I have had that I just haven't been able to get to.

So what are you working on? Are you going to be in the shop this weekend, doing a little home improvement, yard work, HDL, or just getting some R&R. We here at TPW love to know what you are working on and hope you will give a picture or two to inspire the rest of us.

John, sure is nice of you to get your wood stash stocked up for me.  I have all of my cabinet doors built, stained, finished and in a stack so before I start destroying the kitchen in a big way, I have a side table that I snagged in an auction that needs a bit of TLC.  Actually, a total restoration is more like it so that's my next week in the shop.  I'll snap some photos, too.

Now that I have got the rustic head board and sliding door done for our master bedroom and bath, I can get to a few other projects that have been sitting there. I have a wooden electric clock that has exposed gears and workings that got knocked off a the wall at a friend's house that he wants me to repair. It has been sitting for the past 6 weeks waiting for me to get caught up. So now I have moved it from sitting on the table saw over to my main bench. I will start on it today and hopefully can get it repaired.

LOL Looks like Ron is peeking over your fence John waiting for that wood to show up.

Myself I have some pens to turn still and a needle case to finish. After the case is finished though I am probably going to turn that box i have been wanting to get to for the turning contest. Once done, even if I miss the deadline, I will put it up for auction for HFOT.

Our son Nate in Tucson has a small dog that may be a bit neurotic. When he and his SO are working or sleeping, the dog must have something of theirs close by. Usually he drags out one of Nate's work shirts and lays on it. Recently, he snagged a pair of prescription sunglasses of the hall table and chewed the ears and nose pieces off. So, Nate asked me to make him a valet tray for keys, wallet and glasses. I used a bowl bit in the router to make the depressions and, for the glasses section, I'll make a lid/cover. This weekend, I'll be routing, sanding and finishing. It's one chunk of 8/4 walnut.

Hopefully, the dog won't be able to get his little nose under the lid. Can't promise anything on the wallet, though.

Gene, will you be using anything to help keep the lid closed? Maybe a couple of earth magnets will keep it closed well enough that the furry friend will not be able to get it open.

Wow, Charles. I was going to glue it on. Magnets are a much better idea. I have some 1/8X1/2s that I KNOW he won't pry apart!

Thanks for the great idea.

P.S. I think I'll lay the pen in the glasses part when I give it to him. The other one is gone to Japan already.

No problem Gene glad to help and sounds like a great idea to put the pen in that way. I have 4 more people here in town that want the same type of pen but they haven't actually ordered them yet. So far they are proving to be rather popular.

Actually Larry, I am about to go and check out his wood stash and see if any of mine made it up there. Just don't tell him I am coming. It will be our secret.

John I know it is hard to add more time to an already full schedule, but I am sure that would be a good one. I always wanted to get in the scouts, but we could never get a parent to agree to be the leader. So I never got the chance.

I am sure it would be a great experience for him and you too.

I finished some game room cabinets that seems like it took all summer to build...moving on to some dressers for the daughter. Finally! Get a little tired of just doing face frame cabinets.
