September 16, 201213 yr Gloves, long sleeves, jewelry and long hair are all verboten in my shop around operating machinery. Here is another example of why. Near Tragedy A year or so ago, another young lady was not so lucky when she was strangled when her hair was caught in a metal lathe.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' September 16, 201213 yr Yes, that is a tragedy and one that could have been averted. It sounds like the school is circling the wagons as opposed to  taking responsibility. It could also be that as a typical teenage girl she just did what she wanted in spite of being told what to do by an adult.Being bald, I don't have to worry about the hair thing. If I have long sleeves on they are rolled up. I never wear gloves around spinning tools. I do always wear a watch and my wedding ring thought and never really think about it. The ring has been on my finger for pushing 30 years so it is part of me. It has gotten me thinking some about it as I honor my wife by always keeping it on except when I have to take it off to clean the crud out of it as I have been and always will be married to her until death do us part. I have a number of friends who work with their hands in electrical and machining and they got wedding ring tattoos so I have chewed on this for me. The ring doesn't make me married, but is a symbol of that commitment which I gladly bear. Thanks for posting this as a great warning for safety that we many times take for granted.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. September 16, 201213 yr Mike, I try not to get my head close enough to my machines to get grabbed, but just the thought of it happening hurts!  Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum HostMike Dillen said: That could have turned out far worse. September 16, 201213 yr Allen, I can attest to having a permanent wedding band. I forgot my welding gloves at the shop when installing some wrought iron railings once. I figured it's only one weld, and somehow grounded myself doing the weld. I took 90 Amps through my body and now have a groove in my finger from my wedding band, Man did the ring get HOT!. It's still there after 20+ years. The wife said I was strange for a few days after doing it. September 16, 201213 yr Author In my job as a mechanic on USAF planes, I saw, in every maint. shack on every base, a picture of a detached wedding ring finger with all the nerves and ligaments attached. The poor guy to whom the finger belonged had jumped off the back of a flat bed with rails up. His ring got caught between the two upper slats of the rails. That picture still haunts me. For the first several years of marriage, I too, wore my ring always. Several times, it got caught in small spaces while I was doing some mechanical job or another. luckily, nothing was ever moving or spinning. Finally, with the image of that poor guy's finger in mind, I just took the ring off and put it away. I've not worn a watch for 40 years. Leather or metal bands seem to cause a painful rash. And, I always take off my large hoop earrings when in the shop. :-)Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' September 16, 201213 yr Years ago I was out with our hanger Chief (E-7) checking our fuel trucks, as he was coming down off the top of the truck on the ladder on the back. The ladder rungs had little nubs on top that acted as non skid. Well his foot slipped off the rung (he was wearing dress shoes with slick bottoms) as he slipped he grabbed the upper rung and his wedding ring caught on the nubs. It peeled the skin and meat off his ring finger like a glove and you could see the bones on his finger. That was enough for me and I never wore a wedding ring after that. My wife completely understood and said she'd rather I didn't walk around with my skeleton exposed.www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
September 17, 201213 yr A lot of times i will drop a tool on the floor in front of the lathe and have to lean over and pick it up. my hair although shorter than it used to be is still long enough to get grabbed if i am too close. It proved it just a few days ago when it snatched about 4 strands of it. not enough for serious injury of course, but enough to tell my stupid self to turn the lathe off when leaning down like that.I also don't have rings that I wear The one I have doesn't fit so it sits in the drawer of my desk and 99% of my shirts are short sleeve so i don't have to worry about that either. The long sleeve shirts are tight enough that they wont slip when i push them up over the elbow.Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
