September 21, 201213 yr comment_23554 ...now they are ready to deliver. "Also posted in Photos". Walnut, curly maple, a wee bit of turquoise and flocked drawers. Base sculpted to resemble rippling water. Gene 'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton Report
September 21, 201213 yr comment_23571 Gene that looks fantastic. I like the contrasting woods, it really pops! How do you like the texture of the flocking? The times I've seen flocking used it felt a little coarse and hard to the touch.www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops Report
September 21, 201213 yr Author comment_23570 Thanks Mike. I guess it is a bit hard. It's not like felt. It does cushion the jewelry and such, though. Also saves a ton of sanding.- Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton Report

September 21, 201213 yr Author comment_23567 Thanks guys.John, they won't have it until next July. That's when they are due to transfer back to the states. They've seen it via video chat and suggested we wait because they are limited on shipping.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' September 21, 201213 yr comment_23566 Very unique contrasts Gene. The light wood over the darker wood and the softness of the base really sets off the top. Well done indeed.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks Report
September 22, 201213 yr comment_23565 As others have said, the contrasting colors really brig out the beauty in this piece. I think the darker wood accents the grain of that tiger maple beautifully.Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins! Report
September 22, 201213 yr Author comment_23564 Thanks Ron and Lewis.Hey Lewis. Not being a wood expert, I didn't know that maple was called "Tiger". Is that different than "Curly"? I have a bunch of it. It will be the sides of some briefcases that are next on my list. I'm thinking of accenting it with some string inlay of walnut. Around the panels and at the edges two halves of the case. Might be a bit gaudy but my sons are only going to carry them to the shooting range. :-)Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' September 22, 201213 yr comment_23563 I'm no expert either! I thought when the "stripes" were clearly visible- as in your beautiful project- folks called it "Tiger" maple.Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins! Report
September 22, 201213 yr comment_23562 Just looked it up on Google and apparently Curly and Tiger are about the same. Curly is the name give when the figuring occurs in Red or soft Maple and Tiger when it appears in Hard Maple. See, were are both experts!!Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. September 23, 201213 yr Author comment_23561 Curly or Tiger.....I like them both. Tough to plane, though. The final couple cuts need to be about 1/64th to avoid chip out.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K.
