September 27, 201213 yr After an extended illness and other life issues that followed keeping me away from the fun stuff, I'm back to work in the shop. This is a black and gold titanium Sierra (of some sort) with a Purpleheart barrel. The finish is my latest favorite... Tru Oil gunstock finish. It takes a long time to build up the finish, but I really like the end result. It's a durable finish without the plastic like feel you get from CA.
September 27, 201213 yr Beautiful pen. Of course I love Purpleheart pens anyway. So tell me more about the Tru Oil finish. I have been a BLO/CA finisher for a while. I am interested in knowing about this finish. I love the look it gives on this pen.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
September 27, 201213 yr Author As far as the specifics of the product, it's easier for me to post a link...Tru OilNow when used for gunstocks and such you can lay this finish on rather quickly and be done with whatever you're working on in a day or 2, BUT, I build up many very thin layers (maybe 25 or 30 on this particular pen) over a couple of weeks. I can usually get 2 coats (+/- a coat) a day depending on humidity. I just keep adding layers, lightly buffing with 0000 steel wool in between coats, until all the grain is filled then add 5 or 6 more layers. After the final coat has dried a day or 2 I sand it down smooth with 800 grit sandpaper and buff with white diamond. And that's pretty much it.
September 27, 201213 yr Tru Oil Was my main oil for many years on gun stocks. I would even rub the metal down with it and NEVER had a rust problem. I may try the tru oil on pens but at the moment i am still just using CA and EEE Ultra shine between CA coats if it's a bit rough. Great looking pen Donnie and glad to see you back!Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
September 27, 201213 yr I guess I wasn't paying attention and thinking gun stock. But it gives a very nice finish to the pen. I'll have to give it a try.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
