October 1, 201213 yr  Ok, first up, I got the 130 look-a-like drilled for a new bolt, old one had rusted off.   New threads were cut with a 1/4" x 20 tap.    I had TWO Sargent style knobs, each with a different bolt in them.     Trying to decide between a Steel bolt, or a Brass bolt...One will go here, the "loser" will go on another "Fulton" block plane, due in this week.    Say, I just might have to thin the herd a bit...and this is without the two that are on their way here.  Ok, next:  I had some old Beech tote blanks out in the barn.  Thought I'd dress one up, into a usable tote for one of the planes of mine.  Drilled, and ground to shape.     Used both a regular grinder, and a belt sander. Still needed a little more sanding.     Sat it on one of the planes...Looks like I will have to make one for this old Savage #6, as well.    Got the tote as smooth as I could, and mounted on another small plane...Darn, looks like I will just have to turn a new front knob as well.   Tote does have one coat of BLO on it, maybe a second or third might darken things up?  Handle is still a might tall, but I can adjust that.   Seems to fit the spot though.. So, back to the main question.   Brass , or Steel?     This will be for that double ended block plane.  Doesn't have a "brand Name" on it, but seems to be made by Sargent.   I have another handle-less block on the way, shouldn't be any trouble to re-handle.   I now have a "Bottoming Tap".   Since I had two "normal" type taps, I ground one into a bottoming tap.   use the regular tap to start, finish up the threads all the way to the bottom of the hole.   Should come in handy.... October 1, 201213 yr I usually like brass because the warm feeling it gives, whereas the steel is more of a cold look but in this case it seems to go better with the steel than the brassCharles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
October 1, 201213 yr Author Looks like i should have made this into a Poll?    Nah, too many Polls out there, right now. I'll give both bolts a try, for awhile.  Now, IF I can just get back out to the Pole Barn Shop, I might get some more handles made.   Lets see, I'll need a tote & knob for that Savage #6, I have a block plane that has a Bakelite blob for a knob, gotta make a Stanely style knob for it, and turn a knob out of beech for that big Trans plane. Maybe an afternoon's work????As for the tote on the Trans #33?Yep, gotts to turn a knob, now.   The two should match, you know.... October 1, 201213 yr Author Amatching Knob is on the way, I actually got out to the Pole Barn Woodshop today.  Had to glue up a blank for the Beech Knob.    Gave it a spin on the lathe, AFTER I had marked out where a big old nail was.  You will see a black marker, showing the spot..Next, a little lathe work, and, I always will turn a pair of knobs...Cut them loose, and went to drill them out...and now you see why I always make two.     Hate when that happens.    I have the "good knob in a BLO bath, be back later, with the results.   Make a few other knobs as well, except they were out of walnut...Left to right:  Savage #6 knob, a Union #3 knob, and a Stanley #110/120 knob.  Cut them out, drilled them out ( NO SPLITS, this time) and installed the two larger ones.  Savage #6 also got a new tote! Both of these handles will get the BLO treatment..  Just playing around, making some handles... October 2, 201213 yr Author  I think i'm getting the hang of making those totes..Six planes, showing their totes.  Only three are stock, the other three were made by me.   Hint, one is a Painted black by Stanley.    The #8c in the back is scheduled to get a new tote.   And the third stock tote??? October 3, 201213 yr Author  Normal toolbox sort of thing.    I have a few Stanley #4s A set of handyman planes, and a set of Union planes.   Working of a set of Sargent Block Planes.    Can't afford Sargent Bench planes, though.  Some planes, I will re-hab, then sell, some I will keep.  The savage #6 will replace a Stanley #6.    The Stanley is a little too new for me, just 60 years old....Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
