Shop built chatter tool

Featured Replies

This is from a link Lewis provided in his forum post the other day.

The handle I turned from oak, the tool shaft is 1/2" and the steel blade is made from a recip saw blade. The blade is held in place with 2 10/32 set screws. The forward set screw goes through the blade and prevents the jaw opening from opening up when using the tool.

I tried it out on a piece of oak left from the handle and the chatter pattern can be seen and the tool works very well. Oak probably isn't the best wood to try this on because the end grain has a tendency to tear out but it's what I had. I need to fine tune the blade and strip the dewalt yellow off the blade. I'll probably make a few more blades with different profiles. All told I spent about $8.50 to build it. I had the steel rod from an earlier project and the blade was a dull one I had laying in a drawer.

Thanks Lewis for the link. I'll have the blank squaring jig complete next tuesday.

Sorry Lewis I forgot to provide a link to your post: http://www.thepatriotwoodworker.com/forum/topics/wednesday-s-wisdom-for-woodturners-25

Thanks John. Actually it took about 2 hours to build it spread over a couple of days. Spent most of the time at the hospital with the wife. Deb completed her 60 days of Kimo yesterday, now we have the biopsy next Monday and then the wait to see when the transplant will take place assuming the Kimo has done it's job.

Can't wait to see the results of this fine looking tool, Mike!

Prayers to you and your wife for a successful round of treatment and transplant.
