Well I'm glad that arrests are actually being made, No one should get paid for defacing a tree., makes me shake my head too. What is the world coming to?

That's just sad. With a little patience and some searching, he could have found burls on dead and down on private property. Most property owners will give permission. You should take the whole tree and clean up afterwards. But, you've made a friend and got some wood.
