October 24, 201213 yr  Since the move to the new place involved losing that covered back porch, now I have to find another way.    So, i DO have an old swimming pool ladder, and some clamps.    I clamped my belt sander to the ladder, and worked over a block plane this morning.    Fairly stable, in fact.    I will look into a "home-made" type of bench, maybe a couple home-made saw horses under a slab of pine 2xs?   IF it gets too cold out in the pole barn ( now 17 miles away, too far to walk) I could bribe the Grandsons into bringing the Nickleson English planing bench to the new place. The trick would be in getting it down stairs into the cellar.    Then a light for it.   Oh well, life on the move.Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'

October 24, 201213 yr Author  Spent part of today, sitting on my new front porch ( waiting on the mail).   Got some clean up done on the Mohawk-Shelburne Block plane. Sides and sole are now clean and flat.   Where thet meet is square enough to cut a finger sliding along it.   Iron was also sharpened up, using the belt sander clamped to a pool ladder.    Hey, it works.   Mail finally showed up, AFTER I went back in for the day. Two "boxes" from ebay!      One "box" was a clear plastic thing like special loaves of bread are sold in. Works for me.   The other "real" box had something called a Shelton in it.all steel, and VERY rusty!  The iron was even stamped "PATENT PEND."     maybe for the rust???   Looks like fun coming up.   The plastic box?   Had a Had a red frog, with a "409" stamped in it.   Sitting under, and on a few other parts..lathe time to make a new knob?   Heat-treated Chipbreaker?  Plated Brass bolts?extra thick casting for the base?   The handle IS wood, just way toomuch finish on it.  Blue paint on a chrome lever cap?  Ah, Craftsman, that explains it.  Not sure about how the frog sits on the base...Looks like more fun coming up....
