EWT Starter set.

Featured Replies

Has anyone seen the EWT starter set yet (I forget exactly what it's called)?

They appear to be made of a different metal than the original Easy Wood Tool's and are about half the price of the small set. Has anyone seen or bought them/Used them yet? If so, please give us feedback on them, I am wanting to get a set myself but can't yet.

Thanks,

Here's a link to the rougher  http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/7/2/31/131/-/5619/Easy-Wood-Tools-Easy-Start-Rougher

and the link to the finisher http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/7/2/31/131/-/5620/Easy-Wood-Tools-Easy-Start-Finisher

I'm not sure if there is a detailer or not, all I see is these two in the email I got from WoodCraft.

I believe those are the mini version of the full sized set, sorta like the kit's manufactures advertise for pen turning. EWT sells three sizes of the carbide line.

No these are newer than the Mini I just got the email about them a few days ago. So far these new ones have no detailer that I know about as it only lists the two tools in the email.

The Mini's are actually 89.95 each and these are only 59.95 each.

Ok I didn't see that. Not a bad price.

I have one that is identical to the one EWT calls the ROUGHER. Mine is called the Woodchuck Pen Pro. For pens that's all I use once I've rounded the blank with a gouge and thats to save the carbide tip and it leaves a smooth finish, but that's my preference. Mine came with 2 carbide inserts a 2R & a 4R but I use the 4R for everything. It's almost like cheating. They cut through material like a hot knife through butter. One note of caution keep the square stock of the tool flat on your tool rest or you can get a catch and destroy what your turning.

If you turn spindles the DETAILER would be great. For bottle stoppers and pen barrels I think the ROUGHER and the FINISHER would be sufficient but I don't think you could go wrong with all three, they look to be fine tools. Once you've used carbide turning tools you won't want to use anything else and they are almost a must for metals, antler, tru-stone and on some acrylics, though you can use HSS tools on those materials the carbides leave a smooth finish remove material faster and it saves having to sharpen as you do with HSS when turning hard material. I would recommend buying an extra set of inserts depending on how much turning you do. The HOLLOWER looks good as well.

I can't wait to test drive the EWT tools, hopefully soon!

Thanks Mike, yea I am looking forward to my test time too, I have some bowl blanks to turn with them :) I have a feeling though that my time with them will only spoil me into getting a set of my own even if only the Start set :) If I get some cash for Christmas as I sometimes do, I will probably get the set then and then get the detailer as a separate item later. I would also like a hollower since I am wanting to do more bowls and boxes now too, and a vase or two would be nice.

I put a question out to the Jackson family Charles to see if we can get some clear cut differences between the starter set and their mini's. Stand by!

  • 2 weeks later...

OK guys, here is the down lo on the starter set from the horses mouth, Paul Jackson!

"The Easy Start Tools are perfect for beginners, kit makers, and other small projects. Although we changed some of the features compared to our premium tools, these tools still have our Genuine EWT Carbide Cutters. The difference in the tool bar is they are black oxide vs. stainless steel on the premium tools. Easy Starts are smaller than our premium Mini Tools and won’t handle getting more than 1.5”-2” over the rest. I highly recommend them to pen turners. They will also want to purchase a Ci2-R2 radius cutter for the Easy Start Rougher for finishing up their project once they get the roughing done.

They are a real hot item and have been selling like hotcakes for our retailers. The price point is great and as always, we back them up with a 100% money back guarantee and just as important, they are made right here in America! I have attached a pdf of the Easy Start Tools and the new EASY CHUCK. Thanks John!"

And I attached the PDF in this post.
