October 25, 201213 yr My daughter wanted me to make her a headboard for her full size bed similar to what I made for my wife. She wanted something a bit more contemporary with a larger shelf so that she can set a few things on top along with a lip to keep those things from falling on her head as she tends to toss quite a bit when she sleeps (she will be 21 next month and still occasionally falls out of bed). Since this will be attached to the wall using a cleat and that it will also side up against the other wall in the corner, she wanted the shelf to be flush to the sides of the headboard. So we did some measuring and agreed to the size and the basic shape, but I was not sold on the shelf being flush with the sides. So after getting it built without the shelf, I called her out to the shop and had her eyeball the shelf with it flush. Sure enough, she admitted that I was right (imagine that!) and that it would look better with a small overhang on the sides. So I made the overhang 1" and then used thinner trim  on the sides and thicker across the front to get a good shadow line. She really liked it and is happy. I still have to make the lip for the top shelf and then do the final sanding and then stain it. The headboard is made from all 3/4" Beech. She wants it stained with an ebony stain which will give it a unique look with the grain. I made her some frames out of Beech for some posters that she has and she wants the headboard to match them. So here are a couple of pics of what I got so far. Here are the frames that I made for her out of Beech with the ebony stain.  Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. October 25, 201213 yr Nice looking headboard Allen, I can see why she was so happy with it. The Ebony stain on it should look really good. I like the shadow lines you have. They will give it a nice feel.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
October 25, 201213 yr Great frames. The headboard is coming out greatly as well. To know but not to do is not yet to know.WWW.SAWBLADE.COM
November 24, 201213 yr Author Well, this week I finally got the headboard installed in my daughter's room. It has been finished for a couple of weeks, but it sat in the garage until she cleaned things up so I could wade through all the junk and clothes on the floor. Since this week was Thanksgiving and she hadn't cleared me a path, I just bit the bullet and waded through her bedroom to get it installed and off my workbench so I could move on to other projects. She is very happy with it and it fits in well with her other stuff. The headboard is made out of 3/4" Beech with some Minwax Ebony stain with a seal coat of Blond Shellac and 3 coats of Endurovar Satin topcoat. The beech tends to get a bit blotchy and uneven with absorption of the stain, so I did the first coat thinned with mineral spirits and then 2 more coats full strength. The photos are not the best as the lighting is tough in the room and the dark color of the stain. It is hung on the wall with an 18" wide metal cleat and then 2 screws at the base into the studs so it fits nice and snug on the wall. The stain matches the frames that I made for her posters so now she has to figure out exactly where she wants them and then I will hang them for her. Now to move on to other projects.
