benches of Cedar

Featured Replies

Our local big box has a place where they place mill ends and other misc wood. They sell them for 51 cents each and I can usually find some wood for small projects. Recently I saw that they had quite a few 4 foot cedar 2x4s. I picked all that they had and made some benches out of them. The one on the right I made about 2 years ago and used it as  the pattern for the others. I made it to the specs my daughter wanted and she loves it because is very portable and can be used many different  ways. She plans to stain them and use them  on her patio.

Nice benches Ron and what a bargain. I may have to start checking the scrap bin. Those look great and should hold up well on the patio.

Thanks for sharing.

You made them well.  Something to be enjoyed.

One of them never made it outside. I sat it down in the kids play area and they claimed it as their own. It is now a bench where 3 kids can set together and play/draw at the same table. I imagine it will end out going outside next summer. I am happy that they can enjoy it too.

You know it is a nice piece when the kids lay claim to it.

Looks like you scored some nice wood and made some nice benches.

Which big box did you find them at? I'm going to have to check it out!

Harry, I have found that one Home Depot or Lowes may have a different policy than another store in a different area. I go to Home Depot because it is about a mile from me. When I make picture frames and buy plexiglass for them, A Lowes in my area will sell you scrap that is too small for normal use and make a good price for you and even cut it to size. . Another Lowes down the road 10 miles won't sell it for less than what the square inches are.............at normal price. I think that is stupid, they will end out tossing 95% of it anyway. If your big box has a cutting area where they will cut boards/panels to your specs, they usually have a place to put the left overs. Those are where I get the cheap ones. Occasionally they will even make mistakes and toss Oak or some quality wood in that pile. They mark them with green paint on the ends so the cashier can ID them.

Good hunting.

Next time I go "over the hill" (25 miles) I'll have to check them out. Both stores are across the street from each other. I'll just drop my wife off at the thrift store while I go to the "toy" store. I'm always looking for a bargain!

Thanks
