Larry, what a unique one here! I don't believe I have seen one where the segments are broken and spaced, that is way cool.

How did you get the segments spaced like that?

Cool Larry. How much time is invested in it?

Very nice segmented bowl Larry. I bet that was neat turning with the spaces in it. I love the Koa wood.

I use a Incra Jig to cut the pieces on the table saw, then a homemade jig to glue up the blank.  The largest that I've made so far has been 16" diameter and 8" tall, with 500+ pieces

That's a really sweet looking bowl. I'd like to see the bowl from the side, could you post a pic?

Mike,

I'm new to the forum, and somewhere on her, perhaps on my profile page there is a side view of this, and another similar bowl....let me know if you can't find it, I'll try to figure out how to get it to you

Welcome to the forum Larry, the best way to get a image to us is just to upload it here by using the blue icon next to the LINK button on the reply page. then we all can see it here on this thread :) Great looking bowl, I was beginning to wonder if you had a drill press that drilled square holes :) There is a jig or a press that actually does that.

Probably more than I would care to admit....it takes more time to cut the segments and glue up the blank than it does to do the turning and finishing.

As for the actual time, conservatively speaking, probably about 15 hours, more or less.  I've got one that I turned that was 16" diameter and 10" tall, with more than 500 pieces.  That one took a total of 30 hours.

Thanks Larry I found the pics. Those are some beautiful bowls, very nice work. Also a belated welcome to TPW. I look forward to seeing your future projects. Perhaps a blog on your segmenting process. Thanks again!

The turning is the same as any other turning, fairly easy.  The difficult thing is to glue up the blank.  It takes a lot of time...
